US defeats South Africa

The United States claimed a 2-1 victory over South Africa at the Hopman Cup mixed team competition on Sunday.

Venus Williams rallied to defeat Chanelle Scheepers 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, before Kevin Anderson leveled for South Africa with a 7-6 (0), 7-6 (5) win over John Isner.

The U.S. clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win in mixed doubles.

Later Sunday, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga saved three set points before overcoming Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3 to give France a 1-0 lead over Spain. Anabel Medina Garrigues next faces Mathilde Johansson, with mixed doubles to follow.

Williams took time to settle against an opponent who rallied well and hit the ball deep. But after conceding her serve at love to leave Scheepers serving for the first set, the American looked increasingly comfortable and aggressive.

After taking the second set when her opponent double-faulted, she then swept to a 4-0 lead in the third on her way to closing out the match.

Isner held the only break point of the first set for a 4-2 lead but missed his return. In the second set, Isner fought off three break points at 3-2 and another at 4-3, but again fell short in the tiebreaker.

Williams was playing for the first time since winning the Luxembourg event in mid-October and was satisfied with her performance.

"I was just trying to find some rhythm out there," Williams said. "She's obviously a really good player having maintained a top 40, top 50 ranking the last couple of years. She played a match yesterday too so had an extra advantage. It felt good out there.

"I'm not expecting to be perfect now but I'm thinking that my game will get better every match. I think the (mixed) doubles will help as well to hone everything. More than anything I was just so excited to be out there playing and I'm ready to go for it."

Despite health problems that have limited her schedule, Williams is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that the new season presents.

"Last year was so awesome for me, getting to the Olympics. I was extremely happy with last year and I moved up quite a few spots," she said. "This year is just about building on it and putting myself into position to play deep into the draws."

Broncos take top spot with 38-3 win over Chiefs

(AP) ? Peyton Manning figured one one-handed catch deserved another.

So, up the ladder he went ? throwing the ball high in the back of the end zone to Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas leaped and brought it down with his right hand, then got both feet down inside the line for a touchdown. With that, he joined Eric Decker in Denver's one-handed-touchdown club Sunday and gave the Broncos some otherworldly highlights to go with their home-field advantage throughout the playoffs after a 38-3 runaway over the Kansas City Chiefs.

"They claim they can do that all the time," said cornerback Champ Bailey, who got to watch the replays of both catches about a half-dozen times on the scoreboard. "They say they practice that. I don't see it. But as long as they do it on Sunday, I'm all for it. Those are some great, hard-working boys and I expect nothing less."

Manning, in search of his fifth MVP award and, yes, a second Super Bowl title, finished 23 for 29 for 304 yards, three scores and a 144.8 passer rating. One of his main competitors for the award, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings, ran for 199 yards in a 37-34 win over Green Bay that secured a playoff berth.

That one went down to the wire. Manning was out of his game by the fourth quarter.

This was the second straight Sunday he used a grey-and-orange glove to prepare for the cold, playoff weather he could face at home the next two games.

"I threw it OK today, I guess," said Manning, who finished the season with 4,659 yards, 37 touchdowns and a 105.8 passer rating, all second best in his 15-year career.

Thanks to Houston's 28-16 loss to Indianapolis before the Broncos kicked off, Denver (13-3) will be the top seed for the sixth time. The Broncos made the Super Bowl four of the previous five times.

Though the Chiefs (2-14) gave the Broncos as tough a tussle as anyone during their 11-game winning streak ? in a 17-9 loss last month ? this wasn't expected to be much of a game. It wasn't.

Leave it to Manning, ever the perfectionist, to ramp up the degree of difficulty.

On the touchdown to Decker, Manning slightly overthrew the pass but Decker brought the ball into his helmet with his left hand, had it pinball against his facemask twice, then cradled it with both hands as he was falling to the ground.

"Peyton throws the ball up, giving us a chance to make a play. It's our job to catch it," Decker said.

The touchdown to the 6-foot-3 Thomas mirrored a TD pass Manning threw to Decker last week against Cleveland: high in the back of the end zone where only his receiver could catch it.

"That was probably the limit right there," Manning said. "But I've seen him in practice. He can jump. He can really elevate. It's hard to throw it over his head, I'll say that."

The Thomas touchdown made it 28-3 and the celebration was on. The only trip the Broncos will have to make on their road to a championship would be to New Orleans for the Super Bowl. They'll open the playoffs at home the weekend of Jan. 12-13 against Baltimore, Cincinnati or Manning's old team, the Colts.

Coach John Fox, in search of his second trip to the Super Bowl, won his 100th career game. Thomas and linebacker Wesley Woodyard congratulated him with a big splash of orange Gatorade at the end.

"It's an accomplishment, but it's something that was a lot of people's work. It wasn't one guy," Fox said.

Nor would Manning take all the credit for all he's accomplished in this, a comeback season in which he admittedly had no expectations.

This marked his 73rd three-touchdown game, surpassing the record held by Brett Favre. Manning closed the regular season only 41 yards short of his career high.

"It's been a gratifying regular season," Manning said. "I will admit that. It is certainly more than I expected. I'm grateful and humble for it."

On the other end of the spectrum are the Chiefs, who finished with 119 yards of offense and wrapped up the first pick in next year's draft.

Coach Romeo Crennel watched the game from the sideline, leaning on a crutch, after having his knee drained of fluid earlier in the week. Many in Kansas City expect him to be unemployed soon.

"I told him it's been a long one," Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith said about his postgame conversation with Crennel. "Sorry it didn't turn out the way (we wanted). I have faith in you and that's all that matters."

The Broncos swept six games in the division for the first time since 1998 ? the last time they won the Super Bowl.

John Elway retired after that one. Now, he's back, running Denver's front office, and he signed Manning with only one goal in mind: a third Lombardi Trophy.

For a brief glimmer, this could have been a game. The Broncos led 7-0 when Ronnie Hillman fumbled and Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers picked it up and was sprinting toward the end zone.

Manning cut off the Flowers return, allowing tight end Joel Dreessen to drag down Flowers at the 12. The Chiefs settled for a field goal and the Broncos scored the next 31 points.

Notes: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles had 53 yards to finish the season with 1,509. ... Broncos FS Rahim Moore got his first career sack and Von Miller had one to bring his season total to 18?. ... Hillman wasn't seen against after his fumble. Lance Ball replaced him as Knowshon Moreno's backup and led the team with 66 yards on 15 carries.

Corporation or LLC, which is right

?

Many people wonder whether they should have a limited liability company or a corporation for their business. In order to find out which one is right for your 499032_f260business you will need to take a look at the various advantages and disadvantages of each type of business structure and then make your choice.

Here are the main advantages you will get if you decide to incorporate your business:

  1. Limited Liability ? this is a probably the best advantage that you will get if you incorporate your business. In most business structures the owner assumes all of the liability of the company, but when a business becomes incorporated the amount of your liability is limited to the amount of money that you have actually invested in the company. For example if you are a sole business owner then your car or house can actually be seized to pay any debts that your business might owe. But in a corporation the only way that you can be held responsible is if you have given a personal guarantee.
  2. Corporations Carry On - basically a corporation has an unlimited life span where as other business structures will cease to exist in certain scenarios. What this boils down to is that a corporation will continue to exist if the ownership of the business changes, if the shareholders die or leave the business, it doesn?t ever go away.
  3. Raising Money Is Easier - it is a known fact that corporations actually have an easier time raising money and because of this you will have an easier time growing and developing your business. The reason that they have an easier time is that corporations can actually not only borrow and incur debt but they can also sell shares and raise equity capital. This is a huge advantage because equity capital for the most part does not have to be repaid and it incurs no interest. But when you are issuing shares you are also reducing your percentage of ownership in the business.
  4. Income Control ? if you are a corporation you can be the one to determine when you personally receive income, which is a huge tax advantage. Basically what this does is that instead of getting your income when it is received it allows you to take your income at a time when you?ll pay less tax.
  5. Potential Tax Deferral ? this is not a guaranteed thing, but more like an opportunity when it arises. But this works because you can defer paying some tax until a later time so this may make you be able to realize a tax savings because it might put you into a lower tax bracket or you might be able to put it off until tax rates have fallen. This depends on what happens when taxes actually come due.
  6. Income Splitting ? this works because corporations pay dividends to their shareholders from the company?s earnings. So this allows you to split the income how you see fit. This can work because a shareholder does not have to be actively involved in the business to receive dividends. So you can spilt the income with people in your family so that not all of it is getting taxed at the higher tax rate, basically you will be redistributing income from a higher tax bracket to a lower tax bracket
  7. The Small Business Tax Deduction ? if you have a small business and you decide to make it a corporation you might qualify for the small business deduction. This is an annual tax credit that is calculated at the rate of 16% on the first $200,000 of taxable income. This can actually be a much lower tax bracket than that applied to your personal income.
  8. Increased Business ? this isn?t always a guarantee but for the most part people tend to perceive corporations as being more stable than other business, it just has something to do with the name. Not to mention that in some cases, such as contractors, some companies will only do business with you if you are a corporation because of liability issues.

Here are the disadvantages of having your business as a corporation:

  1. Registering a corporation is expensive ? they are very costly to set up. The reason for that is because they are a more complex legal structure than 499030_f260other business structures so creating one is going to be more complicated which requires more costs. These fees can range in the hundreds for small businesses, for the set up alone. And these set up fees can be higher for large businesses.
  2. Liability May Not Be As Limited As You Think ? most people think that they are protected from everything if they have a corporation, but this can be undercut by personal guarantees or even credit agreements. This becomes an issue if others won?t give the corporation credit. This usually happens because the corporation is new so they have limited assets which mean they don?t have enough to secure a loan so the banks and other lenders require guarantees from the owners. What this means is that if you default in repayment obligation on those you can be held liable, meaning lose your car or house.
  3. Less Tax Flexibility ? this area affects business losses. If you own the business on yoru own or with somebody else and your business suffers a loss you can use those losses to actually lower other types of personal income in the year that the losses occurred. But in a corporation if you have a loss they can only be carried forward or back to reduce the corporation?s income from other years.
  4. No Personal Tax Credits ? this can actually be a tax disadvantage for your business because the corporation isn?t eligible for personal tax credits. So in other words every dollar that the corporation earns is taxed. Sole owners and partnerships can claim tax credits that corporations cannot.
  5. Increased paperwork ? with a corporation there is a lot more paperwork involved just to maintain the corporation. An example of this is that corporations are required to maintain a minute book, and in this book you have to have the corporate bylaws and minutes from all corporate meetings. But you also have to keep all of the corporate documents up to date at all times, which means you are going to be facing a ton of paperwork.499035_f260
  6. Another Tax Return - if you decide to have a corporation you are going to have to file two tax retruns each year, one for your individual income and one for the corporation. This means that you are going to end up paying more for your accounting fees. But you are also going to be paying double taxes, because you have to pay personal income tax on the profits that you received plus all of the money made by the corporation is taxed before you receive your share.

Here are the main advantages of having a limited liability company:

  1. Limited Liability ? this is similar to a corporation because you have the same protections as the corporation when it comes to being responsible for the business debts. Basically a LLC exists as a separate entity so the members can?t be held responsible unless they have signed a personal guarantee.
  2. Flexible Profit Distribution ? this allows you to select varying forms of distribution of profits. A partnership requires you to split the profits fifty-fifty, but with the LLC you can do that or choose from another method, however you see fit.
  3. No Minutes ? corporations are required to keep formal minutes, have meetings, and record resolutions. But the LLC business structure does not require you to do any of these things, which in the long run actually makes it easier to operate.
  4. Flow Through Taxation ? all of your business losses, profits, and expenses are going to flow through the company to the individual members. So in this type of business you are going to avoid the double taxation of paying corporate tax and individual tax. In most cases this is considered to be a tax advantage but in some cases a business can benefit from having a corporate tax structure.

Here are the disadvantages to having a limited liability company:

  1. Limited Life ? unlike a corporation a limited liability company will not last forever. In fact these will be dissolved when one member, just one, dies or 499033_f260declares bankruptcy, regardless of how the other members are doing financially or if they want to stay in business. If they want to continue they must redefine their business as a limited liability.
  2. Going Public ? if you have any thoughts about taking yoru business public or issuing shares to your employees in the future you are better off going corporate from the beginning because of the complications of switching later on in the business? life.
  3. Added Complexity ? if you are running a sole proprietorship or even a partnership you are going to have an easier time because they are easy to run and do not require much paperwork. But when it comes to a LLC things get quite a bit more complicated. The reason for this is that a LLC can be federally classified as sole proprietorship, partnership or a corporation for tax purposes, which makes things all that more complicated because you have to learn the appropriate tax rules that apply.

Trolley Company Leaves Wedding Business Rather Than Let Gay ...

Trying to reconcile your personal, religious beliefs that may conflict with running your business can be a difficult thing to juggle, which is apparently why the owner of popular trolley company has decided to walk away from the wedding business altogether rather than be hired by gay couples. The man says he didn?t want to compromise his Christian convictions by accepting same-sex couples who might hire a trolley for their wedding fun.

The owner of the Annapolis tour company says he?s going to ditch out on taking any couples and their wedding parties for rides because he?d have to take gay couples as well as the straight ones, and his religious beliefs conflict with that, reports the?Baltimore Sun.

To that end, he told the Annapolis Patch:??We?re a Christian-owned company, and we just can?t support gay marriages. We?re not trying to make a statement. We?re not trying to make a point. We?re just trying to be faithful Christians.?

He also wants his clients to side with him and lobby state lawmakers to institute an exemption for wedding vendors that would allow them to abstain from taking business due to religious beliefs. Same-sex marriage will become legal in Maryland ?in less than a week, so he?s cutting out while he can.

By walking away from the marriage business altogether, the owner is potentially avoiding discrimination lawsuits that might be brought against the company for refusing to cater to gay weddings.

?If they?re providing services to the public, they can?t discriminate who they provide their services to,? said the general counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, according to the Baltimore Sun. That organization is the one which enforces the laws that don?t allow businesses to discriminate on the basis of ?things like race, sexual orientation, religion and more.

It?s his business, and therefore he can do what he wants, as long as he doesn?t allow anyone to use his service whatsoever. The owner said he will post a full explanation on his company website by Jan.

He did admit to Eye on Annapolis to sending an email to a potential straight client that read:??we used to do weddings until recently. But we?re a Christian-owned business, and we are not able to lend support to gay marriages. And as a public accommodation, we cannot discriminate between gay or straight couples, so we had to stop doing all wedding transportation.?

The man who?d wanted to hire the company for his heterosexual wedding replied in an email, via the Annapolis Patch:??It is your right to run your business any way you see fit, but let?s be honest here, you drive a trolley up and down a street. Not exactly God?s work.?

He?s not the only business to step away from thousands of dollars in potential wedding revenue. According to the?Maryland Wedding Professionals Association, the trolley company is the second vendor to get skittish over the same-sex marriage law.

We?ve seen discrimination accusations against other businesses elsewhere, including B&B owners in Canada who reportedly refused to rent a room to a gay couple?and were subsequently ordered to pay $4,500 to the couple to make up for it.

Childhood Obesity: Not Just Waitin' On The World To Change | Your ...

From Your Health Journal?..?As many of my readers here know, I always say how much I enjoy Dr. David Katz? articles, and today is no exception. I hope you all visit the Huffington Post site to read the entire article (link below). The article starts off by saying how the overweight child was more exception than norm. Nowadays, it is starting to become more of the norm. Recently, we learned over recent months that while the overall prevalence of childhood obesity may have stabilized, and perhaps even declined a bit in some locations, the prevalence of severe obesity has risen steeply. Sadly, too many children are suffering from risk factors for heart disease as well as diabetes. Change is needed, and a strong education on healthy lifestyle. Please visit the Huffington Post web site to read this entire article as well as other great articles.?

From the article?..

I suspect all of us can remember witnessing schoolyard incidents back in our day, a generation or more ago, that involved someone picking on a ?fat? kid ? or back then, perhaps, when childhood obesity was more exception than norm, ?the? fat kid. Some of us can doubtless recall participating in such exchanges, to our credit if we attempted to interrupt them, to our shame if we were complicit in them. Generally the abusive banter, when that?s all it was, served as what passed for wit: reminding a fat person they were fat. As if they might have forgotten.

But however we look back, and however the recollections might induce a wince, we must acknowledge that the situation is far worse now ? because childhood obesity is far worse now. It affects far more kids, of course ? but also is apt to affect them far more severely. In fact, we learned over recent months that while the overall prevalence of childhood obesity may have stabilized, and perhaps even declined a bit in some locations, the prevalence of severe obesity has risen steeply.

So make no mistake: The time-honored and dishonorable practice of literally adding insult to the injuries of childhood and adolescent obesity not only persists, but now afflicts more of our kids than ever. Children trying to overcome the burdens of obesity on their health and self-image are routinely obligated to weather a daily storm of bullying, abuse, and derision. They are denied the solace of friendship ? and often turn to food for comfort. And then, of course, eating the wrong things in the wrong amounts for the wrong reasons worsens the obesity ? and a downward spiral exerts its perilous pull.

At the bottom of it is not just dyslipidemia or Type 2 diabetes or joint pain. At the bottom is genuine despair.

Army Corps of Engineers clear-cuts lush habitat in Valley

An area that just a week ago was lush habitat on the Sepulveda Basin's wild side, home to one of the most diverse bird populations in Southern California, has been reduced to dirt and broken limbs ? by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Audubon Society members stumbled upon the barren landscape last weekend during their annual Christmas bird count. Now, they are calling for an investigation into the loss of about 43 acres of cottonwood and willow groves, undergrowth and marshes that had maintained a rich inventory of mammals, reptiles and 250 species of birds.

Much of the area's vegetation had been planted in the 1980s, part of an Army Corps project that turned that portion of the Los Angeles River flood plain into a designated wildlife preserve.

Tramping through the mud Friday, botanist Ellen Zunino ? who was among hundreds of volunteers who planted willows, coyote brush, mule fat and elderberry trees in the area ? was engulfed by anger, sadness and disbelief.

"I'm heartbroken. I was so proud of our work," the 66-year-old said, taking a deep breath. "I don't see any of the usual signs of preparation for a job like this, such as marked trees or colored flags," Zunino added. "It seems haphazard and mean-spirited, almost as though someone was taking revenge on the habitat."

In 2010, the preserve had been reclassified as a "vegetation management area" ? with a new five-year mission of replacing trees and shrubs with native grasses to improve access for Army Corps staffers, increase public safety and discourage crime in an area plagued by sex-for-drugs encampments.

The Army Corps declared that an environmental impact report on the effort was not necessary because it would not significantly disturb wildlife and habitat.

By Friday, however, nearly all of the vegetation ? native and non-native ? had been removed. Decomposed granite trails, signs, stone structures and other improvements bought and installed with public money had been plowed under.

In an interview, Army Corps Deputy District Cmdr. Alexander Deraney acknowledged that "somehow, we did not clearly communicate" to environmentalists and community groups the revised plan for the area 17 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. He added that the corps would "make the process more transparent in the future."

But Kris Ohlenkamp, conservation chairman of the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, asserted that the corps had misrepresented its intent all along.

Walking Friday through what once had been a migratory stop for some of the rarest birds in the state ? scissor-tailed flycatchers, yellow-billed cuckoos, least Bell's vireos, rose-breasted grosbeaks ? Ohlenkamp said: "We knew that the corps had a new vision for this area, but we never thought it would ever come to this."

Frequent catastrophic floods prompted civic leaders in the 1930s to transform the river into a flood-control channel. Nearly the entire 51-mile river bottom was sheathed in concrete, except in a few spots such as the Sepulveda Basin.

Over the decades, awareness of the river's recreational potential grew. And with pressure from environmental groups, Los Angeles County and corps officials in the 1980s made major changes. The waterway and surrounding flood plain were slowly transformed into a greenbelt of parks, trees and bike paths, courtesy of bond measures approved by voters.

Then in 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency deemed the entire river to be navigable and therefore subject to protections under of the Clean Water Act.

A year ago, Army Corps of Engineers District Cmdr. Col. Mark Toy issued a license allowing the Los Angeles Conservation Corps to operate a paddle-boat program in the Sepulveda Basin, along a 1.5-mile stretch of river shaded by trees teeming with herons, egrets and cormorants.

This summer, paying customers will disembark a hundred yards from the corps' recent clear-cuts.

"Environmental stewardship is critical for us," Deraney said. "But assuring public safety and access to infrastructure designed to deal with flooding are paramount."

As he spoke, a Cooper's hawk swooped down and landed on a nearby tree stump.

Overnight Orange Cranberry Steel Cut Oats (Crock Pot)

Can you believe that Christmas Day has come and gone! It all goes by so fast, doesn?t it!? I hope you had a great holiday and were able to spend a lot of time with family and friends. We have had a lot of snow here in Utah (I think someone said we have the greatest snow on earth?so I suppose that means it has to snow sometimes!) It turns the world into wintry white, and really is quite beautiful. (That is, if? you don?t find yourself slipping and sliding all over the highway in it. Nothing super great about that you know.)

Today,? on this cozy winter day I have a very simple to prepare, fabulously tasty breakfast recipe to share with you.?This?wonderful version of steel-cut oats?is made in the crock pot and cooks away?while you are sleeping. ?Sounds like?something you and I could both enjoy, doesn?t it! A wonderful, healthy breakfast all ready cooked and waiting when you and your sleepy?eyes?get out of bed in the morning! That is something to be happy about.

These steel-cut?oats?are both creamy and flavorful. The?combination of orange, cranberry and almonds compliment the texture of the steel-cut?oats very well. If you haven?t tried steel-cut?oats yet, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Hope you enjoy it!

Time: 10 min. prep + 6-8 hours slow cooking
Yield: 4 servings
Recipe adapted from The Yummy Life

1 C steel-cut oats
2 medium-sized apples, peeled and chopped
3 T brown sugar
2 T butter, melted

1/4 t salt
1/2 t vanilla
1/4 t almond extract
1 1/2 C milk
1 C water
1/2 C orange juice
1/2 C craisins (dried cranberries)

TOPPINGS:
craisins
sliced almonds
milk

1. Find yourself a nice crock pot and spray the inside with cooking spray. (I used a 3 quart crock pot, if you use one that is larger your steel cut oats will cook faster).
2. Add 1 cup steel cut oats.

3. Peel and chop 2 medium-sized apples and add them to the crock pot.
4. Add 3 T brown sugar, 2 T?melted butter, ?1/4 t cinnamon, 1 T flax seed?(optional), 1/4 t salt, 1/2 t vanilla, 1/4 t almond extract, 1 1/2 C milk, 1 C water, 1/2 C orange juice and 1/2 C craisins (dried cranberries). Stir it all together, cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
5. Scoop the creamy steel-cut?oats into 4 bowls and top them with additional craisins, sliced almonds and milk.

Enjoy!

Syria minister leaves Beirut for fear of arrest

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's wounded interior minister rushed home from a Beirut hospital on Wednesday for fear he would be arrested after some Lebanese called to put him on trial for his role in a 1986 crackdown by Syrian troops in Lebanon.

In another blow to President Bashar Assad, his commander of military police defected.

The defector, Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Jassem al-Shallal, is one of the most senior members of Assad's inner circle to join the opposition during the 21-month-old uprising against authoritarian rule. He appeared in a video aired on Al-Arabiya TV late Tuesday saying the army has been turned into a gang to kill and destroy.

Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar, wounded in a bombing of his ministry in Damascus, left a Beirut hospital before his treatment was finished and flew home to Damascus on a private jet, officials at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport said.

Al-Shaar was wounded on Dec. 12 when a suicide bomber exploded his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many. He was brought to the hospital in neighboring Lebanon a week ago.

A top Lebanese security official told The Associated Press that al-Shaar was rushed out of Lebanon after authorities there received information that international arrest warrants could be issued against him because of his role in the crackdown against protesters in Syria.

Over the past week, some Lebanese officials and individuals have called for al-Shaar's arrest for his role in a 1986 crackdown in the northern city of Tripoli.

In the 1980s, al-Shaar was a top intelligence official in northern Lebanon when Syrian troops stormed Tripoli and crushed the Islamic Unification Movement ? a Sunni Muslim group that then supported former Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasser Arafat. Hundreds of people were killed in the battles and since then, many in northern Lebanon have referred to al-Shaar as "the butcher of Tripoli."

The Lebanese security official said Lebanese citizens had also begun taking steps to sue al-Shaar for his role during Syria's military domination of Lebanon for decades. Lebanese are deeply divided over the Syria crisis.

Al-Shaar and other Syrian officials are also on a list of people subjected to European Union sanctions for violence against anti-regime protesters in Syria.

"Lebanese officials contacted Syrian authorities and that sped up his departure," said the security official, adding that a Lebanese medical team is expected to go to Damascus to continue al-Shaar's treatment there. "If such arrest warrants are issued, Lebanese judicial authorities will have to arrest him and this could be an embarrassment for the country," he said.

The airport and security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Syrian government denied at first that al-Shaar was wounded. Then it emerged that he was brought to the Beirut hospital last week for treatment. It was the second time the minister was wounded in the civil war. He was also injured when a bomb went off on July 18 during a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top security officials.

Lebanon and Syria have a long and bitter history.

Syrian forces moved into Lebanon in 1976 as peacekeepers after the country was swept into a civil war between Christian and Muslim militias. For nearly 30 years that followed, Lebanon lived under Syrian military and political domination.

That grip began to slip in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in Beirut. Syria was widely accused of involvement ? something it has always denied ? and Damascus was forced to withdraw its troops. Even so, Damascus has since maintained considerable power and influence in Lebanon.

Shortly after he arrived in Beirut for treatment last week, anti-Syrian politicians, including legislators Jamal Jarrah and Mohammed Kabbara, called for al-Shaar's arrest. Another call came this week, when Lebanese lawyer Tarek Shandab filed a complaint to the country's prosecution accusing al-Shaar of "genocide and ethnic cleansing" in Tripoli.

In another setback for the regime, the defection of the military police chief came as military pressure builds on the regime, with government bases falling to rebel assault near the capital Damascus and elsewhere across the country.

The defector al-Shallal appeared in a video aired on Al-Arabiya TV late Tuesday saying he is joining "the people's revolution."

Dozens of generals have defected since Syria's crisis began in March 2011. In July, Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass was the first member of Assad's inner circle to break ranks and join the opposition.

Al-Shallal is one of the most senior and held a top post at the time that he left. He said in the video that the "army has derailed from its basic mission of protecting the people and it has become a gang for killing and destruction." He accused the military of "destroying cities and villages and committing massacres against our innocent people who came out to demand freedom."

Thousands of Syrian soldiers have defected over the past 21 months and many of them are now fighting against government forces. Many have cited attacks on civilians as the reason they switched sides. Anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in the past 21 months.

In violence on Wednesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government shelling in the northeastern province of Raqqa killed at least 20 people, including eight children, three women and nine others. An agricultural area near the village of Qahtaniyeh was hit by the shelling.

An amateur video showed the bodies of a dozen people including children lying in a row inside a room. Some of them had blood on their clothes, while weeping could be heard in the background.

The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted.

Also Wednesday, activists said rebels were attacking the Wadi Deif military base in the northern province of Idlib. The base, which is near the strategic town of Maaret al-Numan, has been under siege for weeks.

In October, rebels captured Maaret al-Numan, a town on the highway that links the capital Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

The attack on Wadi Deif comes a day after rebels captured the town of Harem near the Turkish border. The rebels have captured wide areas and military posts in northern Syria over the past weeks.

In Lebanon, airport officials in Beirut said Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and Assistant Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous flew early Wednesday to Moscow.

Their visit to Moscow comes two days after Assad met in Damascus with Lakhdar Brahimi, the international envoy to Syria. Brahimi, who is scheduled to go to Moscow as well, gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

Brahimi is still in Syria and met Tuesday with representatives of the opposition National Coordination Body, state-run news agency SANA said. The head of the group, Hassan Abdul-Azim, said Brahimi briefed them on his efforts to reach an "international consensus, especially between Russia and the United Stated to reach a solution."

NCB spokesman Rajaa al-Naser said his group said there must be an end to violence and formation of a "transitional government with full prerogatives."

Logitech UE 4000

In the past year, Logitech has released what feels like an infinite number of new headphones under the UE brand?named for Ultimate Ears, the company it acquired in 2008. Of all the options we've tested thus far, the UE 4000 might be the simplest, best value. At $99.99 (direct), it's a comfortable, on-ear pair that delivers deep bass without too much boosting, and with no distortion, even at top volumes. Occasionally, things can sound overly bright. But in the $100 realm, there are few truly amazing headphones, and the UE 4000, with its measured frequency response, inline microphone/remote for iOS devices, and detatchable cable, is a solid value, and a clear Editors' Choice for low-cost headphones.

Design
The simple, supra-aural (on-ear) design of the UE 4000 is available in a black-and-white frame, an all black frame, and a purple-and-black model. The earpads are sufficiently cushioned, though the underside of the headband could stand to be a bit more padded. Regardless, after a long listening session, the UE 4000 remains mostly neutral?you won't be marveling at how comfortable the fit is, but it won't cause any real discomfort, either.

An inline microphone and three-button remote for iOS devices is located a few inches below the left earcup along the cable. One added bonus: The audio cable, which is the Logitech UE signature blue, is detachable. This means you can replace the cable, which is the most likely culprit when headphones begin to malfunction, rather than the entire headphone pair?a nice bit of added value.Logitech_UE_4000_inline

Call clarity for the UE 4000 is pretty standard?the mic delivers your voice clearly to your call partner, and you should hear your partner clearly as well. But don't expect high fidelity, as cellular call quality is still pretty weak across the board.

Other accessories included with the UE 4000: a 3.5mm adapter that turns your single headphone jack into two (so you can listen to your phone with your buddy simultaneously), and a zip-up protective carrying pouch.

Performance
The Logitech UE 4000 delivers above-average performance for a $100 headphone pair. It doesn't offer overwhelmingly powerful deep bass performance, but it does provide a good sense of sub-bass frequencies?you hear the thuds and resonance of deep bass content in electronic music, for instance, but the sounds are delivered in a fairly measured manner, rather than an all-out subwoofer-like assault like you might experience with, say, the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre. At top volumes, the UE 4000 does not distort, even on tracks with extremely deep bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout."

The best quality of the UE 4000's sound signature, however, is its crisp, clear delivery of hi-mid and high frequencies. This is not a pair that would ever be called muddy?though some listeners might find it on the slightly overly-bright side, depending on your tastes and what content you're listening to.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the lows are not under-represented, but the there's no added resonance or body for the lower register strings. The overall sound is bright and articulate, with a spotlight on higher-register strings and percussion. The big drum hits at the end of the piece can sound thunderous on headphones that boost the sub-bass frequencies more; here they sound pretty natural, with an emphasis more on the attack, in the mid-frequency range, followed by a subtle low-end sustain. In this sense, the UE 4000 is similar to a flat-response reference pair of headphones?not anemic on the bass front, but certainly not booming.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the attack of the kick drum loop is treble-heavy, but still packs a substantial thump, while the sub-bass synth hits beneath the loop are delivered with enough push to feel powerful, but again, nothing approaching subwoofer-like presence. Bass lovers will appreciate the fact that the UE 4000 doesn't distort on deep bass and does not ignore it?but this is not a booming, bass-heavy pair of headphones.

If you're looking for more booming bass in this price range, consider the SOL Republic Tracks. Or, if you're looking to spend even less on an on-ear pair, the Noontec Zoro offers reasonable quality for the price. Spending more will net you far more quality: The Sennheiser HD 558, for instance, is a revelation of clarity and balanced performance, but it's significantly more expensive. The UE 4000 is a solid, no-frills headphone pair that delivers mids and highs cleanly and avoids overly boosted bass?without avoiding bass altogether for less than $100. For this, it earns our Editors' Choice award.

Newtown inundated with support, consolation on Christmas

Residents of Newtown Connecticut and out-of-towners alike came together Christmas Day to comfort families grieving after the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.?

Members of the Rutter family of Sandy Hook, Conn., embrace early Christmas morning as they stand near memorials by the Sandy Hook firehouse in Newtown, Conn.,Tuesday. People continue to visit memorials after gunman Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire, killing 26, including 20 children, before killing himself.

When a gunman wiped out nearly an entire first-grade class and killed students and adults in two other first-grade classrooms just 11 days before Christmas, it made it impossible for the holiday to be the same this year.

Some residents, like Joanne Brunetti, have found ways to console and help their grieving neighbors. Well-wishers from around the country are stopping by to do the same.

Brunetti watched over 26 candles that had been lit at midnight, just before Christmas Day, in honor of those slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She and her husband, Bill, signed up for a three-hour shift and erected a tent to ensure that the candle flames never went out throughout the day.

"You have to do something and you don't know what to do, you know? You really feel very helpless in this situation," she said Tuesday. "People have been wonderful to everybody in?Newtown?whether you were part of what happened or not. My thought is if we were all this nice to each other all the time maybe things like this wouldn't happen."

At a town hall memorial, Faith Leonard waved to people driving by and handed out Christmas cookies, children's gifts and hugs to anyone who needed it.

"I guess my thought was if I could be here helping out maybe one person would be able to spend more time with their family or grieve in the way they needed to," said Leonard, who drove to?Newtown?from Gilbert, Ariz., to volunteer on Christmas morning. "I know they've been inundated with support and that's great, but it's always nice to have a present to open on Christmas Day."

Julian Revie played "Silent Night" on a piano on the sidewalk at the downtown memorial. Revie, from Ottawa, Canada, was in the area visiting at the time of the shootings. He canceled his plans to go to Australia, found a piano online and chose to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day playing for the people of?Newtown.

"It was such a mood of respectful silence," said Revie, who planned to leave the piano behind. "But yesterday being Christmas Eve and today being Christmas Day, I thought now it's time for some Christmas carols for the children."

Many town residents attended Christmas Eve services Monday evening and spent the morning at home with their families. Others attended church services in search of a new beginning.

At St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, attended by eight of the child victims of the massacre, the pastor told parishioners that "today is the day we begin everything all over again."

Recalling the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, the Rev. Robert Weiss said: "The moment the first responder broke through the doors we knew good always overcomes evil."

"We know Christmas in a way we never ever thought we would know it," he said. "We need a little Christmas and we've been given it."

Volunteers hung ornaments on a series of memorial Christmas trees Tuesday morning while police officers from around the state took extra shifts to direct traffic, patrol the town and give police here a break.

"It's a nice thing that they can use us this way," Ted Latiak, a police detective from Greenwich, Conn., said Christmas morning, as he and a fellow detective, each working a half-day shift, came out of a store with bagels and coffee for other officers.

The expansive memorials throughout town have become gathering points for residents and visitors alike. A steady stream of residents, some in pajamas, relit candles that had been extinguished in an overnight snowstorm.

Others took pictures, dropped off toys and fought back tears at a huge sidewalk memorial in the center of?Newtown's?Sandy Hook section that is filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards. Snow covered a pile of teddy bears displayed in town.

Newtown?officials plan to convert the countless mementos paying tribute to the 20 children and six adults into a memorial. Thousands of flowers, letters, signs, photos, candles, teddy bears and other items at sites around town will be turned into soil and blocks to be used in a memorial, The News Times in Danbury reports.

The mementos will stay up until after the New Year as residents and visitors pay their respects.

Police have yet to offer a possible motive for gunman Adam Lanza's rampage. The 20-year-old?Newtown?man, who lived at home, killed his mother in her bed before heading to the school and killing 20 children ? all either 6 or 7 years? and six adults. He then killed himself.

Associated Press writer Debbi Morello contributed to this report.

TV star Jack Klugman dies at age 90

Jack Klugman, one of television's most-loved actors, died today at the age of 90. He died peacefully at his home in Northridge, Calif., with his wife, Peggy, by his side, according to an announcement by his attorney.

In a career that spanned more than 60 years, Klugman epitomized the "everyman," and was best known for two popular television series of the 1970s and early 1980s: "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy, M.E."

In "The Odd Couple," about two divorced men living together -- a neat freak and a slob -- Klugman played Oscar Madison, the slob sportswriter to Tony Randall's overly fussy Felix Unger.

"The Odd Couple," which was based on Neil Simon's play of the same name, brought Klugman two Emmys, not bad for a man whose first drama teacher told him he was better suited to be a truck driver. The show ran for five years, and has lived on for decades in syndication.

PHOTOS: In Memoriam -- People We Lost in 2012

In "Quincy, M.E.," a precursor to "CSI," Klugman became just as iconic playing the relentless Los Angeles medical examiner with a talent for forensics. "We had some wonderful writers," Klugman said in a 1987 Associated Press interview. "Quincy was a muckraker, like Upton Sinclair, who wrote about injustices."

A heavy smoker, Klugman fought throat cancer, and subsequent surgery left him with a raspy voice, which was worked into later movie and TV roles, including "The Odd Couple: Together Again" in 1993 and "Dear God" in 1996.

A year after his "Odd Couple" co-star, Tony Randall, died in 2004, Klugman published "Tony and Me," and told CNN: "A world without Tony Randall is a world that I cannot recognize."

Klugman began his career in 1954 on the soap opera "The Greatest Gift." In the same year he made several appearances on the NBC legal drama "Justice," whose episodes drew from actual cases of the Legal Aid Society of New York.

His major movies included "12 Angry Men" (1957), playing juror No. 5; "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962), starring opposite Jack Lemmon; and "Goodbye Columbus" (1969), based on the novella by Philip Roth, starring Ali MacGraw and Richard Benjamin.

Born Jacob Joachim Klugman on April 22, 1922, in Philadelphia to Russian Jewish immigrants, Klugman studied acting at Carnegie Insitute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and moved on to summer stock and off-Broadway, rooming with actor Charles Bronson, according to The Associated Press. He made his Broadway debut in 1952 in a revival of "Golden Boy." An early TV high point was appearing with Humphrey Bogart and Henry Fonda in a production of "The Petrified Forest." He also had roles in several "Twilight Zone" episodes.

He was married to actress-comedian Brett Somers, who played his ex-wife Blanche in "The Odd Couple," from 1953 until her death in 2007. His survivors include their two sons, Adam Klugman and David Klugman, and two grandchildren.

He married Peggy Crosby, the ex-wife of Bing Crosby's son, Phillip Crosby, in 2008.

A memorial service has not yet been scheduled.

The Associated Press and ABC News Radio contributed to this report.

Security Loophole In Facebook?s Camera App Allowed Hackers To Hijack Accounts Over WiFi [Confirmed]

Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 10.55.10 AMPSA to all Facebook Camera users on iOS: If you haven’t update you app in the past few days, update?it now. The older version of the app, pre-1.1.2 and released before December 21, has a?security loophole. When used over WiFi networks, malicious hackers can tap the network and hijack Camera users’ accounts, picking up information like email addresses and passwords in the process. The white-hat hacker who ID’d the problem is Mohamed Ramadan, an Egypt-based security researcher and trainer with Attack-Secure?who has also found and reported vulnerabilities for Apple, Google, and Etsy — which apparently also had the same loophole in its iOS app. Ramadan tells us that the issue lied in the Camera app’s Secure Sockets Layer certification, which was too open. As he puts it, “The problem is the app accepts any SSL certification from any source, even evil SSL certifications and this enables any attacker to perform Man in The Middle Attack against anyone uses Facebook Camera App for IPhone. This means that the application doesn?t warn the user if someone in the same [WiFi network] trying to hijack his Facebook account.” Testing his theory by using a proxy to listen in on a WiFi network, he was able to type in his username and password into the Camera app, and then see that information appear via the proxy. Ramadan notes that he’s tested all Facebook apps and the rest appear to protect from this similar vulnerability. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but haven’t received a response. [Update: Facebook has confirmed Ramadan's bug discovery, which it addresses in the 1.1.2 version, and provided us with the following statement, noting that there is no evidence that the bug ever got exploited in the wild:] “We applaud the security researcher who brought this bug to our attention for responsibly reporting the bug to our White Hat Program. We worked with the team to make sure we understood the full scope of the bug, which allowed us to fix it and upgrade the Camera application without any evidence that this bug was?exploited in the wild.?Users are only vulnerable if they are using an unsecured or untrusted public wireless?network?and an older version of the application. As always,?we remind all users to only connect to networks they trust. Users can protect themselves by downloading the latest version of the Camera?app.??Due to the responsible reporting of this issue to Facebook, no

Gloomy predictions as Washington approaches the 'fiscal cliff'

It's still possible that the 'fiscal cliff' with its automatic?tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts can be avoided. But the clock is ticking toward Jan.1, and most lawmakers are pessimistic.

The New Year may be more than a week off, but realistically Congress and the White House have less than that as the clock ticks toward the ?fiscal cliff? with its automatic tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts that could throw an already-weakened economy into a tailspin.

On the Sunday before Christmas, lawmakers worried and postured, with a few ? very few ? expressing just a bit of optimism that anything would be done in time.

"We can do better and we should do better," Senate Budget Committee chairman Kent Conrad said on ?Fox News Sunday.? "I would hope that we would have one last attempt here to do what everyone knows needs to be done: which is a larger plan that really does stabilize the debt and gets us moving in the right direction.?

For now, says Sen. Conrad (who?s retiring), Speaker John Boehner and the White House should ?split the difference? on the most recent offers from both sides, resulting in $1.45 trillion in spending cuts and $1.15 in revenue for a combination of $2.6 trillion.

?You couple that with the $1.1 trillion that?s already been done [in the Budget Control Act] and you?re at $3.7 trillion,? he said.

That leaves a lot of heavy lifting, Conrad concedes: ?Is it perfect? No. Is it everything we?d hoped for? No. Does it match what Bowles-Simpson did? No.?

The general mood Sunday was well expressed by another senator about to retire, Joseph Lieberman.

"It's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not,"?Sen. Lieberman said on CNN?s ?State of the Union.? "If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American.?

Joining Conrad on Fox News, Sen. Jon Barrasso, (R) of Wyoming, said tumbling off the fiscal cliff is inevitable.

?I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes,? he said. ?He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff.?

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

But reverting to higher tax rates for even the wealthiest Americans remains a show-stopper for many tea party Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Judging by the latest twists in the drama ? including House Speaker John Boehner?s inability to get his own party behind his ?Plan B? ? plus public opinion polls showing Obama with a much better job rating than Boehner and the GOP seen as mostly to blame, Obama in fact may be more inclined to hang tough.

?The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he?ll come back, propose just what he proposed ? and we?ll end up adopting it,? said Sen. Johnny Isakson, (R) of Georgia on Fox News. ?Why not go ahead and act now??

Why not, indeed said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, also speaking on Fox News.

"It is time to get back to the table," said the Minnesota Democrat. "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."
