FLOTUS Has Landed: Michelle Obama Launches Official Twitter Account
It's a big day for the first lady: She's turning 49 and she's starting an official First Lady Twitter account. While Michelle Obama had been on Twitter before (@MichelleObama), her old account was restricted to campaign usage. With the new @FLOTUS account, she'll be able to tweet about official (and, hopefully, not-so-official) First Lady Business.
While she only has two tweets so far (both written by staffers), Michelle O. has already racked up nearly 30,000 followers. Crossing our fingers for Twitpics of the president couchsurfing to new episodes of The Bachelor.

A quick look at New+Rising games for your Windows Phone
Windows Phone Central's Roundup of New+Rising Games
Sure... you can use your Windows Phone for checking email, making phone calls, taking pictures, and other productive activities. But it's also a great device to play games on.
Couldn't really come up with a good theme for this week's Windows Phone Central Roundup so I decided to pick a few games from the New+Rising list over at the Windows Phone Store.
No rhyme or reason as to which titles made it to the roundup and if you've stumbled across a new Windows Phone game you'd like to recommend, sound off in the comments.
PenguinAirborne (free): PenguinAirborne is a racing game of sorts that involves skydiving. You compete against four other penguins to see can reach the ground the quickest without going splat.
As you fall, you can tilt your Windows Phone left or right to try to catch bonus items as you plummet to earth. Last to hit the ground gets a bomb dropped on them, ending the game for that penguin. Survive all five rounds, you get promoted and move on to the next level.
PenguinAirborne isn't a feature rich game but it's still a nice way to pass the time with. PenguinAirborn is a free, ad supported game for your Windows Phone that you can land here in the Windows Phone Store.
Egg Man Rally (trial/$.99): Egg Man Rally is a Windows Phone game that will test your speed and balance. You are racing a buggy across a hilly course, maintaining balance and avoid bouncing your egg out of the buggy. Balance is maintained by forward and reverse, on-screen controls.
You can modify your buggy suspension and weight balance to better the odds. The game spans race courses in eight Countries and each Country has six courses. Egg Man Rally also has online leaderboards through Scoreloop.
Again, not many features to this game but Egg Man Rally has nice graphics, fun game play, challenging physics and is nice addition to the Windows Phone gaming library.
There is a trial version available with the full version of Egg Man Rally running $.99. You can find Egg Man Rally here at the Windows Phone Store.
Fingerball Free (free): Fingerball wasn't exactly what I expected but it's ends up being a simple game that has an odd addictive quality to it. Gameplay is about as simple as it can get. Tap the ball to bounce it in the air and keep tapping it to keep it airborne. If the ball hits the ground, game over.
There are six different scenes to compete in and six different difficulty levels (harder the difficulty, the smaller the ball). Each tap earns you a point and naturally you try to earn as many points as possible. ?The game sounds easy but it's more challenging than you would think.
Fingerball has online leaderboards and if you achieve the high score, you'll earn a champions cup. When someone tops your score, you lose the cup.
Fingerball is a free, ad-supported game that you can find here at the Windows Phone Store.
Sparks (free): Sparks is an interesting puzzle type game for your Windows Phone where you have to guide a light through a maze of tunnels while avoiding various enemies. Along the way your light or spark needs to light torches (black little lighthouses scattered about) and can collect floating shards to regain health.
A virtual joystick in the bottom left of the screen is used to guide your light. A combat joystick sits in the bottom right to give your light a burst of speed to destroy your enemies.?Sparks is a minimalistic type of game that has it's fair share of challenges. It is a multi-level game and not a bad way to pass the time with.
Sparks is a free, ad-supported game that you can find here at the Windows Phone Store.
Obsessive Collecting Disorder (free): Obsessive Collecting Disorder is a multi-level platform game for your Windows Phone. You have to guide your character through a maze of dangers, collecting coins along the way. Collect all the coins and you're transported to the next, more challenging level.
Left and right movement is controlled by tilting your Windows Phone. The more you tilt, the faster the little stick figure goes. When you're ready to jump, just tap the screen.
Obsessive Collecting Disorder has seventy levels spread across seven stages. The only downside to this is that if you leave the game, you have to start each Stage at the first level. Some of the levels can be tough so it sucks to have to replay them instead of resuming where you left off at. ?It reminds me a little of Shift 2 but will less of a puzzle solving element.
Obsessive Collecting Disorder is a free, ad-supported game and you can find it here in the Windows Phone Store.
Again, no rhyme or reason behind selecting these games from the New and Rising section of the Windows Phone Store. I did begin to try Trick Shot Bowling, which looks like an interesting game, but it kept crashing right after the start screen.
Of the bunch, Egg Man Rally was the most enjoyable but each game wouldn't be a bad way to pass the time with. If you've spotted a New+Rising game that you would recommend, jump on board and speak up in the comments.

A dual-language upbringing reflected in young children's vocabulary, Concordia study shows
This press release is available in French.
Montreal, January 16, 2013 Language mixing using elements from two languages in the same sentence is frequent among bilingual parents and could pose a challenge for vocabulary acquisition by one- and two-year-old children, according to a new study by Concordia University psychology professor Krista Byers-Heinlein. Those results are likely temporary, however, and are often counterbalanced by cognitive advantages afforded to children raised in a bilingual environment.
With immigration and international mobility on the rise, early exposure to two languages has become the norm for many children across Canada, particularly those raised by parents who themselves are bilingual.
How do these bilingual parents use their two languages when interacting with their young children? Until recently, little has been known about how often parents switch between languages when interacting with their toddlers, and whether such exposure to language mixing influences vocabulary size.
To find the answers, Byers-Heinlein, who is also director of the Concordia Infant Research Laboratory and a member of the Centre for Research in Human Development, collaborated with Dr. Janet Werker's Infant Studies Centre in Vancouver. She recruited 181 bilingual parents who spoke English as well as another language, and examined how often and in what situations they mixed languages while speaking with their children. Each parent had a one- or two-year-old child being raised bilingually or trilingually, having heard English and one or two other languages regularly since birth.
Rather than being a rare phenomenon, the results showed that language mixing is common in interactions between bilingual parents and their children. Indeed, 90 per cent of parents reported mixing their languages in interactions with their children. Parents did not mix their languages haphazardly, however, but instead reported principled reasons for mixing. For example, they borrowed words from the other language when there was no adequate translation, when they were not sure of a word, and when the word was hard to pronounce. Parents also reported frequently borrowing words from one language when teaching new words to their children in the other. Thus, bilingual parents might use language mixing as a strategy to make sure their children learn words equally in both languages.
Byers-Heinlein then examined the vocabulary size of 168 children of parents who had responded to the study. All of the children were learning English, but their non-English language varied widely from German to Japanese, French to Farsi. As such, she focused on children's English vocabulary size, while statistically controlling for the words that children likely knew in their non-English language.
She found that exposure to parental language mixing predicted significantly smaller comprehension vocabularies (words understood) in the younger children, and marginally smaller production vocabularies (words spoken) in the older children.
Why is that? Byers-Heinlein explains that, "high rates of language mixing make it harder for children to categorize words they hear. That could lead to slower word learning and smaller vocabularies. It also seems that it's more difficult to learn a word from a mixed-language sentence than from a single-language sentence."
But that in no way means that children raised in a bilingual environment are at a disadvantage. Byers-Heinlein cautions that, "even if exposure to language mixing is initially challenging for vocabulary acquisition, it likely has benefits over the long term."
"Studies comparing monolingual and bilingual infants have shown that bilinguals are more adept at switching between strategies and are more able to learn two rules at the same time," she explains. "Infants exposed to frequent language mixing could develop specific strategies for coping with this type of input. That could lead to cognitive advantages that would outweigh any initial difficulties brought about by language mixing."
Byers-Heinlein is now undertaking new research with French-English bilinguals in Montreal to examine whether these findings hold in other bilingual communities, and when children's vocabularies are assessed in both of their languages.

Congressman Steve Stockman prepares East Texas pastors in D.C. to oppose Obama gun agenda
Two weeks before Wednesday?s White House event in which President Obama advocated ideas for tightening gun laws, Republican Congressman Steve Stockman was hosting a group of East Texas pastors in Washington to prepare the opposition. The group ? which included ministers, home-school advocates and members of Stockman?s family ? attended several days of meetings in early January paid in part by Gun Owners of America, a group that advocates repealing federal laws banning firearms?from school zones. There were?sessions at the conservative Heritage Foundation, they heard from Barry Goldwater?s? one-time campaign manager and?Christian historian David Barton of Aledo conducted a tour of the Capitol, according to an East Texas pastor who attended. Barton heads a Texas group, Wallbuilders, which denies the separation of church and state.
Stockman supports gun rights. This week, he proposed impeaching Obama over the issue.?The East Texas congressman ?was first elected in the 1994 GOP wave, ousting Democratic veteran Jack Brooks. Stockman?s wife described Brooks as ?an evil man? whom God ordained should be swept from office, the attendee said. ?Just exactly what evils Brooks represented was a subject I sought help on from the group,? the attendee said. Brooks had supported the 1994 Brady bill requiring background checks on individuals buying firearms. Voters turned Stockman out after one term, and after a failed run for railroad commissioner, he was re-elected in November. During the meetings with pastors, Stockman was sworn in ceremonially at the Heritage Foundation by Texas evangelist Rick Scarborough. Scarborough encouraged pastors to preach on political issues and endorse candidates from the pulpit.
?The group gathered for a photo standing on the steps of the Capital and sang God Bless America. One of the home-school mothers lamented we could get arrested,? the attendee said. Some home schoolers described themselves as ?full quiver families.? ?This is the belief that God wants married women to produce as many children as they?can for their full quiver,? the attendee said. On a bus provided by trip sponsors, the group watched a movie, The Last Ounce of Courage, which centers on the struggle of Bob Revere, a man dealing with what he feels is his freedom of religion under attack by the government and an ACLU-like group. ?The hero says he will become a ?freedom fighter? to fight the enemies who seek to harm the country he fought for,? the attendee said.

Pulse of UTMC ? Blog Archive ? Weight Loss and Massage Therapy
Scientists now confirm what massage therapists have always known: massage can be a powerful and effective weight-loss tool. By improving your body?s resilience aiding muscle nutrition and flexibility, and supporting your mental and emotional well-being, massage can take your weight loss plan to a whole new level.
The relationship between massage and weight loss is the result of many subtle improvements working together, including better injury prevention and healing. Jeff Wooten, founder of Your BodyMechanic.com, explains: ?Massage helps to heal existing injuries by breaking down scar tissue and other adhesions. This creates a more functional muscle and improves joint integrity.? This makes you less likely to hurt yourself, meaning more productive and pain-free hours in the gym.
Deneen Rhode, a massage therapy instructor who teaches fitness classes, says ?The qualitative style of Swedish massage relaxes the nervous system and takes the body into what is known as the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic state is very restorative to the body?it is where the body goes to heal itself.? When you accomplish this through massage, it means you?ll need less recovery time between workouts and that you can move your fitness routine full speed ahead.
While it?s natural for anyone to feel a little self-conscious at first about undressing for a massage, overweight clients often have major anxieties about disrobing. If you put off massage therapy because you?re embarrassed about your body shape, take heart: massage therapists are sensitive to your concerns, and don?t want you to feel ashamed. We are therapists and are used to seeing all shapes and sizes. A well-trained massage therapist has an entirely clinical perspective, no different than any other health care worker. Throughout the course of a massage, clients are discretely draped under a sheet, with the therapist only uncovering the body part being worked on.
Massage is a powerful way to love, respect and nurture yourself. When you love yourself, you won?t engage in unhealthy lifestyle choices. Regular massage is all about reconnecting with your body and getting back to yourself. As you continue to take time out to relax and care for your body through regular sessions, you?ll naturally become more aware of your body?s needs and more motivated to meet them. It?s all part of a greater picture of health and fitness.
Your massage therapist wants to help you build a bridge between mind and body that will last a lifetime. So update your massage from guilty pleasure status to indispensable health habit, and reap the benefits in the form of a fitter, happier you.

HR ? A Key Crisis Management Component | Business 2 Community
We frequently speak about the importance of your crisis management team working in close connection with other departments for a reason ? it works. While crisis management covers a broad spectrum of responsibilities and is often managed by outside contractors, those in specific departments have not only focused their expertise, but also are intimately familiar with how to get things done within their organization.
It?s common to discuss tools to help you in handling external issues in crisis, but for the internal issues that inevitable arise look no further than the HR department for a pool of assistance. Here, a quote from a KBPJ.com artible by Dan Weedin explains exactly why:
- When a crisis occurs, there is instantly fear and uncertainty. The human resources expert(s) in your business should be a calming and reassuring influence. Even if the honest answer to many questions is ?I don?t know,? at least there is a communications leader within the organization. Many times, the boss is busy putting out the fire. Someone needs to be available for the employees.
- If the emergency results in notifying family members, the HR department is the best ?voice.? Because they are not dealing with the crisis directly, they can be a much more capable sounding board and empathetic communicator.
- Human Resources knows the laws and regulations that could come into play with shutdowns, terminations, re-assignments, and other employee-related moves.
- The Human Resources director has a direct line to the morale of the employees during and after the crisis. Most crises don?t just end quickly. The lingering effects can include uncertainty, fear, drama, lack of production, anger and depression. As the boss, you may be in the middle of dealing with your own feelings, stress, and responsibility, and need someone to be a leader for your team.
An inside source that knows the lay of the land and has files on all of the human resources you have at your disposal sounds like a key crisis management component to us.
How can you best prepare your HR department to handle its role when it comes to a crisis? Pretty much the same way you would any other group: assign crisis roles, create crisis plans that address the potential issues, as well as a few meant to blanket large areas of unpredictable ones, and then practice, practice, practice. If you have an in-house crisis management team, all the better! Set up a nice lunch and have everyone get chummy, then bring them back and get to work on those plans.
If you don?t, then (and you?d better believe we?re speaking from experience here) your contractors will be pleasantly surprised to hear they have a trained and prepared HR team ready to assist when they hit the scene, and that assistance will make it that much easier for them to jump into the situation and get to work.

Parting Schotts: College Hockey Slap Schotts Week 13 ? Mayor's Cup
I have seen all five college hockey games between Capital Region rivals RPI and Union at the Knickerbocker Arena/Pepsi/ Arena/Times Union Center. Two games were played in the Capital Skates Classic (1996 and 1997), while the other three came during the Governor?s Cup tournament (2006-08).
The biggest crowd for any of those games came in the inaugural Capital Skates, when 5,660 fans saw Union beat RPI, 2-0, Nov. 19, 1996. The following year?s game drew only 3,364 fans, The next two Capital Skates were played at the Glens Falls Civic Center before that series ended in 1999.
There were three Governor?s Cup matchups between RPI and Union from 2006 to 2008, but those games attracted less than 5,000 fans each year.
TU Center general manager Bob Belber isn?t ready to give up on having those two teams making a go of it in his arena.
The two squads will meet for the first time at the TU Center since the 2008 Governor?s Cup. They will be playing for a different kind of Cup. The Mayor?s Cup will go to the winner of the Jan. 26 game.
Why does Belber think this particular game will work?
?Union and RPI is, obviously, a huge rivalry,? said Belber, who expects a crowd of 8,000 for the non-conference contest. ?As you get into the second half of the year when these teams match up, it becomes more and more important for their quest to get to the playoffs and into the ECAC [tournament]. I think more people want to come. Everybody?s thinking hockey now.?
And it seems like everyone is embracing the concept of the Mayor?s Cup.
During Monday?s press conference at the TU Center, the three mayors ? Albany?s Jerry Jennings, Schenectady?s Gary McCarthy and Troy?s Lou Rosamilia ? were there, along with Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino. They all took turns talking about how wonderful it is to have this game.
Union was represented by coach Rick Bennett, athletic director Jim McLaughlin, senior forward Kyle Bodie and senior defenseman Greg Coburn. RPI had coach Seth Appert, athletic director Jim Knowlton, senior forward CJ Lee and senior defenseman Nick Bailen (who had to shave his beard. You will how different he looks without the beard in a video link below).
Even though the game won?t count in the ECAC Hockey standings, both sides are excited to face off against one another. A sample of the comments.
Appert: ?Playing Union is an elite experience because the animosity between the two teams is unique, and the location on how close we are. But now to do it in a non-conference setting a third time for the Mayor?s Cup in downtown Albany, we have an opportunity here [for] both programs and both schools and fan bases to create a really special, unique experience for our programs, and this will help both programs long-term, not only in the play, but if we can build this event into an event where we?re getting 7,000 to 10,000 people annually, it becomes a marquee event and a recruiting advantage for both of our programs, and a great student-athlete experience.?
Bennett: ?The Governor?s Cup was more of a tournament format, where [the Mayor?s Cup] is a one-game matchup. It?s like Game 7 of the Stanley Cup. It?s kind of nice to put an emphasis on that. We haven?t played them in a while, so it rejuvenates the rivalry because the two games we played this season were sellouts in both places. I don?t care if it?s a street hockey game. There?s going to be tremendous competition, it?s going to be a great game and we?re looking forward to it.?
Bodie: ?It?s going to be a great event in a great building. To have it local instead of going to Lake Placid to play, both schools will bring a lot of fans. I?m sure both schools will bring lots of fans. Every time we play them in my four years since I?ve been here, it?s been the most intense games of the year. There will be no problem for either side getting up here.?
Bailen: ?Going against Union, it?s a battle every single time. Knowing they beat us the last few times, it?s going be real intense, real physical. It?s going to be a playoff game. It?s going to be real hostile.?
Lee: ?Personally, I feel very fortunate to be a part of it. It?s a special event for us and for Union, as well.?
Coburn: ?It?s exciting. It?s a good idea. It?ll be a lot of fun.?
Part of me wants to believe this game will be a success. But having seen the previous five games at the Knick/Pepsi/TUC not draw well, the other part of me wonders if this will be a failure, as well.
There are two things that will attract the fans. One is the date. Playing the game in January, when people are thinking hockey, is a smart move. People tend to be distracted in October and November because of either the World Series or college football, and hockey may not be on everyone?s mind then.
The other factor is that RPI is tired of being dominated by Union. The Dutchmen have won the last seven meetings, including the two ECACH matchups in November. And Union has won the last nine Capital Skates trophies, which is still alive and goes to the winner of the season series.
There are a couple of drawbacks. One is the perception that people don?t like to go to downtown Albany at night. The other is that the game doesn?t mean anything for the league standings.
I hope the Capital Region sports fans embrace this game like they do the Dutchman Shoes football game between RPI and Union, and the Mayor?s Cup men?s and women?s basketball games between UAlbany and Siena. If they do, it will become a great tradition.

Autism Awareness game at RPI
RPI will host an Autism Awareness Game Friday against Colgate.
In addition to raising awareness for Autism, the goal of the arrangements for that night is also to make the experience more comfortable for the children with Autism and special needs who are in attendance at the game.
Among the opportunities to help raise awareness that evening is the elimination of music over the sound system as well as the exclusion of the goal horn as those with autism are sensitive to loud music. Additionally, the volume of the public address announcer?s microphone will be lowered.
Also, because of sensitivity to bright lights, the video board will not feature flashing displays and the Houston Field House spot lights will have blue bulbs. Blue is the signature color of Autism.
RPI?s coaches will wear Autism Speaks Puzzle Piece lapel pins. The pin is a replica of the Autism Speaks logo. On the back of the pin is the slogan, ?Autism Speaks. It?s Time to Listen.?
There will also be opportunities for the Albany Autism Society to raise awareness and money. Members of the group will staff a table with information and literature to distribute. The night?s Chuck-a-Puck proceeds will be donated to the Autism Society.
More information about autism can be found at http://www.autismspeaks.org.

GOP party chief quits
?I can no longer in good conscience tell individuals to give any more money to the national or state Republican parties or vote straight Republican,? he said.
After 33 years supporting the GOP, Oravetz said he will become more involved with Grassroots America ? We the People, a local conservative political action committee, and other ?liberty movement? groups, including the Tea Party, Constitutionalists and Ron Paul supporters. He served five years as county chairman.
Oravetz said he expects an exodus by other GOP county chairmen.
?I am not retiring,? he said. ?Instead I will double-down and work to elect conservatives with principle who want to save this country.?
Oravetz said the Republican Party is ?at war.? He said the party's base, the party workers and ardent conservatives, are incensed with the GOP establishment, which is driven by money, power and crony capitalists.
Smith County Republican Club President David Stein said Oravetz served the county and GOP voters well over his tenure.
?I think, like a lot of people, he is fed up with all of them,? he said.
Stein said the county party will have to find someone who will ?pick up the banner? and appeal to the broader reach of likely GOP voters. He said he agrees with many grassroots ideals but that politics has always been about compromise.
?It comes down to the practical versus principle argument,? he said. ?You can stand and shout in the forest and nobody hears you, but it's a waste of breath, even if you are right.?
Political analyst and publisher of the Quorum Report Harvey Kronberg said Tea Party-type activists are a ?component? of a split GOP base.
He said they are a highly motivated and vocal portion of the party but that their purification movement does not appeal to the majority of statewide and national voters.Kronberg said the GOP base ranges from evangelicals, single-issue (such as abortion or guns) voters and moderates and that there is no central voice that unites the factions.
?There are so many philosophical threads that (the GOP) is in disarray and while its base is vocal, it is a shrinking base proportionate to the rest of the country,? he said.
Minorities and younger progressives are the rising voter demographic, Kronberg said. He does not expect a mass exodus of county chairmen because the positions are difficult to win.
Oravetz said the final straw was the re-election of both U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.
?The party doesn't stand for anything anymore. It has a good platform, but the establishment doesn't stand for its principles,? he said. ?The long-term goal will be to replace the Republican Party.?
Oravetz said the election of Ted Cruz to the U.S. Senate was a message to the national and statewide GOP that the conservative base and liberty movement is growing rather than fading. He said established Republicans are ?scared? and will make efforts to strengthen their appeal to conservatives.
Kronberg said disillusionment is part of politics. Disillusionment is more prevalent among those on the extreme right or left, he said.
?You have to be with them 100 percent or it's seen as a betrayal,? he said.
Oravetz said his goal is to see Constitutional conservatives who are more interested in what is right for the country rather than their personal or political careers.
?We need politicians with the character and conviction of those who signed the Declaration of Independence,? he said. ?They put their sacred honor, fortunes and lives on the line for liberty.?

Guns already allowed in schools in many states
Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, some organizations are offering gun training and concealed-weapons classes for free. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.
By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News
With the debate over gun violence reshaped by the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school last month, lawmakers across the country are pushing proposals to arm teachers in the classroom. But many of them may be wasting their time.
More than a third of the states already allow teachers and other adults to carry guns to school. In most cases, all you need is the equivalent of a note from the principal ? you usually don't even need law enforcement approval.
NBC News reviewed the firearms and education laws in all 50 states and found that 18 of them allow adults to have a loaded gun on school grounds, usually as long as they have written permission.
That's for pretty much any reason; the list doesn't include states that generally ban guns but carve out narrow exceptions for specific activities like safety demonstrations or military formations and parades.
The families of the children murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as well as other Newtown, Conn., community members, are demanding change. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.
During a Tea Party forum in Fort Worth, Texas Gov. Rick Perry became one of the first prominent officials after the Dec. 14 shootings to call for teachers to be allowed to carry firearms to work ? even though Texas already allows any qualified adult to do so as long as the principal OKs it.
Since then, lawmakers in several states have jumped on board with proposals that mirror laws already on the books.
In Alabama, for example, state Rep. Kerry Rich, a Republican representing DeKalb and Marshall counties, has proposed legislation that would give schools the option of letting their teachers or administrators carry guns.
They already have that option.
In Kentucky, lawmakers said last week they're contemplating ?legislation that would let teachers and administrators pack a weapon after completing safety training.
Kentucky school boards already have the authority to allow that.
Oregon state Rep. Dennis Richardson, a Republican representing Central Point, said in an e-mail to schools superintendents in his district that, he too, supported allowing teachers to carry weapons at school.
Oregon school boards can already give that permission.
Self defense
The real debate is over proposals to create exemptions from gun bans in states that don't have them. Such measures have been introduced or proposed in Alaska, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee. (The Michigan Legislature passed a bill last year, but Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed it.)

Why the internet is incensed by the suicide of activist Aaron Swartz
The Reddit architect and free-culture hero was locked in a bitter courtroom battle after allegedly stealing millions of files from MIT
Aaron Swartz, a 26-year-old technology wunderkind, hung himself on Friday, Jan. 10. Swartz was a co-founder of the incredibly popular social-sharing site Reddit, but had struggled in recent years after being relentlessly pursued by the U.S. attorney general's office for allegedly downloading millions of files illegally from MIT computers. In the days since Swartz's death, the internet has been consumed with and outraged by this tragic tale. Here's what you should know:
Who was Aaron Swartz?
One of the greatest minds of the internet generation. A talented programmer and?"hero of the free culture movement," Swartz is one of the co-creators of RSS (he was 14 at the time) and a co-founder of Reddit. He helped design the architecture for Creative Commons (used on sites like Wikipedia, Flickr, and more), and co-founded the internet activist group DemandProgress. Swartz's voice was also instrumental in striking down SOPA, the controversial anti-piracy bill defeated in early 2012. According to Lawrence Lessig, director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University, Swartz was "always and only working for (at least his conception of) the public good. He was brilliant, and funny. A kid genius. A soul, a conscience, the source of a question I have asked myself a million times: What would Aaron think?"
Why did he kill himself?
Swartz had a history of inner-demons, and made no secret about his battles with depression. Over the course of his short career, the young activist also made enemies in high places ? most notably the U.S. government. Boing Boing's Cory?Doctorow recalls one of Swartz's more prolific crusades against PACER, a database for court documents that Swartz believed should be available for all to read freely:
The post-Reddit era in Aaron's life was really his coming of age. His stunts were breathtaking. At one point, he singlehandedly liberated 20 percent of U.S. law. PACER, the system that gives Americans access to their own (public domain) case-law, charged a fee for each such access. After activists built RECAP (which allowed its users to put any caselaw they paid for into a free/public repository), Aaron spent a small fortune fetching a titanic amount of data and putting it into the public domain. The feds hated this. They smeared him, the FBI investigated him, and for a while, it looked like he'd be on the pointy end of some bad legal stuff, but he escaped it all, and emerged triumphant. [Boing Boing]
Then, unfortunately for Swartz, 2011 happened.
What happened in 2011?
Swartz was arrested for illegally accessing computers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he wasn't a student, to gain access to over 4 million scholarly papers kept by JSTOR, which subscribers can use to download scholarly papers and journals. Swartz allegedly hid a laptop in a computer closet and intended to liberate the files for anyone with an internet connection.?JSTOR said it would drop any civil claims after being pressured by critics ranging from hacker groups to prominent scholars, but government prosecutors insisted on pursuing Swartz. The New York Times reports:
At his trial, which was to begin in April, he faced the possibility of millions of dollars in fines and up to 35 years in prison, punishments that friends and family say haunted him for two years and led to his suicide. Mr. Swartz was a flash point in the debate over whether information should be made widely available. On one side were activists like Mr. Swartz and advocacy groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Students for Free Culture. On the other were governments and corporations that argued that some information must be kept private for security or commercial reasons. [New York Times]
Several observers noted that the penalty was unusually harsh?for a crime that didn't injure anybody or claim any victims, and many felt they were trying to make an example of Swartz. Either way, the case weighed heavily on the young activist. Journalist Quinn Norton, in a heartbreaking tribute essay detailing her intimate relationship with Swartz, says she "tried to take care of him while he was being destroyed, from inside and out":
I struggled so hard, but not as hard as he did. I told him, time and again, that this was his 20s. It would be better in his 30s. Just wait. Please, just hold on. [Quinn Norton]
What does Swartz's family say??
While Swartz did not leave a suicide note, his family and partner say that his death "is not simply a personal tragedy," but a "product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach."
What does MIT say??
In a statement emailed to the press on Sunday, MIT president Rafael Reif promised to investigate the charges. "I want to express very clearly that I and all of us at MIT are extremely saddened by the death of this promising young man who touched the lives of so many," he said. "It pains me to think that MIT played any role in a series of events that have ended in tragedy."?Hours after Reif's statement, hacktivist group Anonymous defaced the university's website, which was unavailable intermittently?on Sunday. The group called?the prosecution "a grotesque miscarriage of justice" and "a distorted and perverse shadow of the justice that Aaron died fighting for."

Successful by Association: A Look at Your Local Realtor Associations
by Peter Ricci
It was the mid-?90s when the state of Illinois adopted the ?broker?s choice? model for its Realtor associations, a move that radically changed how real estate agents in and around Chicago interacted with their associations.
No longer were Realtors obligated to join the association that represented their territory of business. A Realtor in West Town, for instance, was no longer required to join the Chicago Association of Realtors (CAR); a Realtor in River Forest did not have to join the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors (OPAAR); and lastly, no longer did the Realtor working in Naperville have to join the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors (MORe). From then on, agents were free to choose whichever Realtor association they wished to join, and through which association they would attain the two major benefits of membership: access to the MLS, and the official right to use the distinguished ?Realtor? title.
And those benefits remain popular with Chicago?s real estate professionals. According to the most recent data from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, there were more than 48,000 registered real estate brokers in the Chicagoland area as of October 2012, and the majority of them belong to a Realtor association. Indeed, between CAR, MORe, OPAAR, the North Shore-Barrington Association of Realtors (NSBAR), the Heartland Realtor Organization (HRO), the Three Rivers Association of Realtors and the Realtor Association of the Fox Valley, 68 percent of Chicagoland?s agents are part of a Realtor association (for a more detailed look at those associations, see our sidebar here).
But given that members of the seven local Realtor associations enjoy similar benefits, why do agents join one association and not another? With broker?s choice rights in place, how do agents choose
their association?

Customer Service Devices - Business Insider
But many retailers fail to focus on the quality of their associates and allocate too many resources to branding, said Shannon Warner of?Cognizant Technology Solutions.?
There's a relatively simple way retailers can improve customer service: by giving associates mobile devices.
"Associates going mobile provides the silver bullet and holy grail for customer service," said John Skorupa of RIS News.?
Today, there is a discrepancy between what customers expect and what retailers provide, Skorupa said in a?presentation at the National Retail Federation's convention in New York City.?
Customers want retail associates to be experts on the products they're selling and to help find the merchandise in stores. But most retailers are failing at this, according to a report by Cognizant.?
Giving associates a tablet or mobile phone gives them a way to access information about products, explained Skorupa. The devices could also give associates information about the customer's order history or where to find out-of-stock merchandise elsewhere.?
"Good customer service is in the top three influencers of customer decisions," Warner said. "Yet customers consider associates to be one of the least credible resources when it comes to getting information about products."?
Providing mobile devices to associates helps retailers to create the stores that shoppers want.?

NJ mayor Booker can raise money for US Senate bid
Newark Mayor Cory Booker has taken an initial step toward running for Senate in 2014, adding intrigue to his political future and that of 88-year-old fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg, who currently holds the seat.
Booker filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday that allows him to raise money for a Senate campaign. The prolific social media user has not tweeted about it or made any public announcements about the filing, and his staff did not return a call to The Associated Press on Friday, but it came as no surprise.
Booker, perhaps New Jersey's highest-profile Democratic politician, last month turned down the party leaders who wanted to see him challenge incumbent Chris Christie in the 2013 gubernatorial election. Instead, Booker said, he was looking at a run for the Senate next year.
His interest puts pressure on Lautenberg, the oldest member of the Senate.
When Booker said he might run for the seat, he praised Lautenberg for his service, but said he had not spoken with him about his plans. Lautenberg's spokesman, Caley Gray, said in a statement Friday that Lautenberg has not decided whether to seek re-election next year.
The Stanford-educated Booker has steadily built his national profile over the last six years as Newark's mayor. An adept social media user with 1.3 million Twitter followers, Booker is known for responding to constituent complaints electronically and last year took on a tweeted challenge to live on food stamps for a week.
Lautenberg, who was treated for cancer three years ago, missed the Jan. 1 vote on the "fiscal cliff" legislation because of the flu but has never given any indication that he would like to retire.
And Booker has not said whether he would be willing to take on Lautenberg in a primary run if the senator tries to keep his seat.
In 2008, New Jersey's Democratic establishment decided that Lautenberg was not too old to serve.
Rep. Rob Andrews challenged him a primary. Most of the state's Democratic leaders stood with Lautenberg, who won handily then retained his seat in the general election.
Rep. Frank Pallone, a Democrat from central New Jersey, has also expressed interest in Lautenberg's seat. But on Friday, his spokesman, Raymond Zaccaro, said Pallone's not thinking about whether he'll run in the election, which is 22 months away, but instead is focused solely on recovery from Superstorm Sandy, which hit his district hard.
Booker was elected mayor of Newark in 2006 with 72 percent of the vote, four years after narrowly losing a bruising battle against longtime Mayor Sharpe James. The race was chronicled in the 2005 documentary "Street Fight." He was re-elected in 2010 with about 60 percent of the vote.
During Superstorm Sandy, he invited residents to charge their cellphones at his house. In April, he let the world know through Twitter that he rushed into his neighbor's house and rescued her from a fire. During a snowstorm, he helped shovel people out.
Booker's critics say he spends too much time rubbing elbows with celebrities and not enough fixing his city.
But in one case, his high-profile connections paid off. In 2010, after sitting with Booker at a dinner, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg agreed to donate $100 million to try to improve education in the city. Booker also boasts of a more stable city budget and of downtown redevelopment on his watch.
A Rhodes Scholar who grew up in suburban Harrington Park, N.J., Booker is the son of civil rights activists who were among the first black executives at IBM. He got his law degree from Yale Law School, then moved to one of Newark's most notoriously violent housing projects.

The RK3066 Android 4.1 mini PC is the MK802's younger, smarter, cheaper brother, we go hands on
When the MK802 Android mini PC landed in our laps, it caused more than a ripple of interest. Since then, a swathe of "pendroids" have found their way to market, and the initial waves have died down. While we were at CES, however, we bumped into the man behind the MK802, and he happened to have a new, updated iteration of the Android mini PC. Best of all, he was kind enough to give us one to spend some time with. The specifications speak for themselves, and this time around we're looking at a dual-core 1.6GHz Cortex A9, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of built-in flash (and a microSD slot), WiFi in b/g/n flavors, DLNA support and Bluetooth, all running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. There's also a micro-USB, full-size USB, female HDMI port and 3.5mm audio out.
For anyone who has used one of these types of devices, the two standout features mentioned above should be the audio jack, and the addition of Bluetooth. Why? Because this expands the potential functionality of the device manyfold. Beforehand, the lack of Bluetooth made adding peripherals -- such as a mouse of keyboard -- either difficult, or impractical. However, with Bluetooth, setting up this device to be somewhat useful just got a lot easier. Likewise, with the dedicated audio out, now you can work with sound when the display you are connecting it to (a monitor for example) doesn't have speakers. Read on after the break to hear more of our impressions.

Report: Lance to admit doping in Oprah interview
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Lance Armstrong plans to admit to doping throughout his career during an upcoming interview with Oprah Winfrey, USA Today reported late Friday.
The interview, scheduled to be taped Monday and broadcast Thursday night on the Oprah Winfrey Network, will be conducted at Armstrong's home in Austin, Texas.
Citing an anonymous source, USA Today reported that the disgraced cyclist plans to admit using performance-enhancing drugs, but likely will not get into details of the allegations outlined in a 2012 report by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that led to Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life from the sport.
His representatives declined comment late Friday, including attorney Tim Herman, but Armstrong sent a text to the Associated Press early Saturday morning saying: "I told her (Winfrey) to go wherever she wants and I'll answer the questions directly, honestly, candidly. That's all I can say."
The New York Times first reported last week that Armstrong was considering making a confession.
The 41-year-old Armstrong, who vehemently denied doping for years, has not spoken publicly about the USADA report that cast him as the leader of a sophisticated and brazen doping program on his U.S. Postal Service teams that included use of steroids, blood boosters and illegal blood transfusions.
Winfrey's network announced Tuesday that Armstrong agreed to a "no holds barred" interview with her.
A confession to Winfrey would come at a time when some of Armstrong's legal troubles appear to be clearing up.
Any potential perjury charges stemming from his sworn testimony denying doping in a 2005 arbitration fight with a Dallas promotions company over a contract bonus worth $7.5 million have passed the statute of limitations.
Armstrong faces a whistle-blower lawsuit filed by former teammate Floyd Landis accusing him of defrauding the U.S. Postal Service, but the U.S. Department of Justice has yet to announce if it will join the case. The British newspaper The Sunday Times is suing Armstrong to recover about $500,000 it paid him to settle a libel lawsuit.
Armstrong lost most of his personal sponsorship ? worth tens of millions of dollars ? after USADA issued its report and he left the board of the Livestrong cancer-fighting charity he founded in 1997. He is still said to be worth an estimated $100 million.
Livestrong might be one reason to issue an apology or make a confession. The charity supports cancer patients and still faces an image problem because of its association with its famous founder.
The New York Times reported that Armstrong may make a confession in an attempt to return to competition in elite triathlon or running events, but World Anti-Doping Code rules state his lifetime ban cannot be reduced to less than eight years. WADA and U.S. Anti-Doping officials could agree to reduce the ban further depending on what new information Armstrong provides and his level of cooperation.
Armstrong met with USADA officials recently to explore a "pathway to redemption," according to a report by "60 Minutes Sports" aired Wednesday on Showtime.

Skype 6.1 for Windows adds Outlook integration, (slightly) refreshed toolbar
Skype's latest update has arrived on Windows (although not Windows 8) and, likely due to its status within Microsoft, it's integrated Outlook features into version 6.1 alongside some cosmetic refreshes. You can now get access to your Skype contacts' status, mood message and other contact details within Outlook contact cards, with the same profiles now appearing within the Skype program. You also call any phone number from within Outlook, with Skype already doing the legwork of connecting to any contact whose details are stored within your email client. Better still, if you've already got them added as a contact in Skype, you can send instant messages and make or video calls from the outset. These features will work on Outlook 2010, while it's now easier to add new contacts to Skype when you don't already have a someone in your contact list. You can pick up the new integrated app (with a gently tweaked toolbar) at the source.
(Update: We've also been informed that the Mac version has been bumped up to version 6.1, and you'll now be able to call direct from Safari webpages.)
