A search for two missing New Jersey boys who were best friends took a tragic turn Monday as authorities pulled their bodies from the Raritan River.

The body of 10-year-old Francisco Perera was found around 3 p.m., near the base of the Route 27 bridge in nearby Highland Park, New Brunswick police Capt. J.T. Miller said. The body of 11-year-old Devine Nicholas was found about three hours later, not far from where Perera was discovered.

A fisherman who saw the first body to be pulled, later identified as Perera, said it appeared to be "a little boy."?Shortly after, Nicholas' body was pulled from the river.

The boys went missing Sunday. Perera reportedly told his mother he was going to the park on Harvey Street, a few blocks away from their Somerset Street home.?

Devine Nicholas had gone to Perera's house around 1 p.m., and the pair apparently left there around 6 p.m. to go to the park, according to?Carol Leonard, Nicholas' mother.?

Leonard said that as far as she knew, the boys did not regularly go to the Raritan's banks. She described her son as a fun and outgoing "good kid" who brought home all As and Bs in school.

"They didn't have any business going to the river," she said.?

Jennifer Smakolski, of Franklin Township,?told The Star-Ledger of Newark?that she was walking along the banks of the river Sunday night when she saw the two boys in the water, walking away from the shoreline. She said they were in the water up to their ankles and, concerned for their safety, she asked them if they knew how to swim.

Smakolski, who was with her 5-year-old daughter, said both boys told her they could swim. So she moved on, assuming they would not wade much farther into the low-lying river.

When she and her daughter returned to the river area on Monday night, not long after the second body was found, Smakolski was stunned to learn of the tragedy.

"I'll be thinking about this forever," she said through tears. "If only I'd stayed a little longer."

It's not clear how the boys ended up in the water. Police are continuing to investigate.?

Apple traditionally reports sales data for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as a whole during its quarterly earnings reports.

Apple filed two requests to keep the documents sealed commenting "Without further action, these highly confidential exhibits will be publicly disclosed causing severe harm to Apple."

If the court refuses to seal the documents, Apple has requested for a 5-day stay on making those documents public.

Apple vs. Samsung is currently underway in a Federal courthouse in San Jose. The case is to determine if Samsung?s range of smartphones are designed so similar to the iPhone that they are infringing on Apple patents.

Ebola was spread widely at funeral of first victim

Doctors Without Borders says that while that is good advice people without symptoms are not contagious, and avoiding contact with others' bodily fluids is the best way to limit an Ebola outbreak.

Research could lead to improved oil recovery, better environmental cleanup

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? Researchers have taken a new look at an old, but seldom-used technique developed by the petroleum industry to recover oil, and learned more about why it works, how it could be improved, and how it might be able to make a comeback not only in oil recovery but also environmental cleanup.

The technology, called "microbial enhanced oil recovery," was first developed decades ago, but oil drillers largely lost interest in it due to its cost, inconsistent results and a poor understanding of what was actually happening underground.

The new findings by engineers at Oregon State University, published in the Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, could help change that. This may allow the oil industry not only to produce more oil from their existing wells, but also find applications in cleaning up petroleum spills and contaminants.

"This approach of using microbes to increase oil recovery was used somewhat in the 1980s when oil prices were very high, but the field results weren't very consistent and it was expensive," said Dorthe Wildenschild, an associate professor in the OSU School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering. "It's seldom used now as a result."

Oil drilling has always been difficult -- it's not as simple as drilling a hole and watching the petroleum gush out of the ground.

That may happen for a while, but as a secondary step, water is often injected into the well to help flush out more oil. Such production techniques generally recover only one-third to one-half of the oil originally present in a reservoir.

A third approach sometimes used after water injection is to inject microbes into the well and "feed" them with sugars such as molasses to encourage their growth. This can clog some pores and in others has a "surfactant" effect, loosening the oil from the surface it clings to, much as a dishwasher detergent loosens grease from a pan.

"By clogging up some pores and helping oil move more easily through others, these approaches can in theory be used with water flushing to help recover quite a bit more oil," Wildenschild said.

The surfactant can be human-made, or microbes can be used to produce it at a lower cost. However, getting a particular culture of microbes to produce the biosurfactant under harsh field conditions is tricky.

"It's complicated, you have to use just the right microbes, and feed them just the right foods, to accomplish what you want to do," Wildenschild said.

In OSU laboratory experiments, Ryan Armstrong, a recent doctoral graduate at OSU, found that the clogging mechanism is the simplest and most effective approach to use, although combining it with the biosurfactant technology achieved optimal oil recovery.

A better fundamental understanding of this process -- along with higher oil prices that better reward efforts to recover more oil -- could lead to renewed interest in the technology on a commercial basis, the OSU researchers said, and make oil recovery more productive. As an extra benefit, the concepts might also work well to help remove or clean up underground contaminants, they said.

But as our children grow older our reach diminishes.? Rejections, breakups, bike and car accidents, serious health issues, the death of friends or family are beyond our ability as parents to fix.? And it hurts.? Oh how it hurts not just them but us.

All of my children have been through valleys.? Some much deeper and longer lasting than others, but all have tasted loss, the death of a dream or multiple dreams.

When my ninety-year-old father suddenly developed pneumonia and was put on a breathing machine, our youngest daughter called to say she wanted to come home.? She is single and because she works at a school, summertime gives her a bit more flexibility with her hours.? After a couple days of discussion with her boss and with us she booked a ticket and flew home, arriving on the day the doctor took my father off the breathing machine.? It was an emotionally difficult day for all of us.? We were concerned about my father?s comfort and care.? We were hyper watchful over my mother who was not sleeping well at night and anxious each day for the love of her life who was slipping away.

That Monday afternoon after the suspense of removing the tubes and machine had passed and my father was breathing well on his own, my mom said, ?I don?t want him to be left alone tonight.?? My brothers and I had been sitting with her for five days by then and we too were exhausted.? Laura said, ?I?ll stay with him tonight.?? At first no one believed her but after all the adults had resigned, she was left standing.

I am not at liberty to share about our daughter?s losses, it is her story to tell if she wishes, but I will say she has had more than her share, from my perspective, more than I imagined she could bear.? I feared for her life, for her faith, for her future and I prayed deep soul wrenching prayers for her.? She has chosen to believe, to not run away from God and the fruit of that faith was displayed during the last week of June in a hospice room in a small southern town.

She sat with my father all night, not sleeping, but listening to his breathing, talking to him when he seemed alert.? Her two cousins, who have had their own losses, joined her in the vigil.? On Wednesday night she returned to her post.? I asked her before we left the hospital at 10 pm if she was ok staying all night again, that this might be the night he died, that God would take him home.? She said yes.? At 5:30 Thursday morning she called in tears to say Grandpa was gone.? She had stayed with him at his side all night, her cousin again keeping vigil with her.? She played a playlist of hymns on her iphone that she made just for her Grandpa, including his favorite, ?It is Well With My Soul.?? She talked to him when he coughed.? She looked in his eyes and watched him stare toward the ceiling at those waiting to escort him Home.? And she told him he could go that we?d take care of Grandma. Then he took his last breath.? She closed his eyes at 5:16 and knew he was gone.

What could possibly produce that kind of compassion and care in a twenty-something who is not a nurse by profession?? Nothing but the hand of the Great Physician, our Wonderful Counselor who had been nearer to her in her losses than any parent or friend can be.? We, her parents, did not teach or train this profound heart of love in our girl.? It is the work of God alone.

Though it is very difficult, we parents must keep the long view in mind when our children suffer losses, especially profound life altering losses.? We do not know what God might be doing in their lives.? We dare not get in His way.? We are called to protect and nurture but more than that we are called to trust in a sovereign God who knows what He is doing.

We were given many gifts in the last weeks of my dad?s life.? Times of sweet prayer and being together, loving one another and even laughter.? But the greatest gift to me and to my mother was the gift of one granddaughter and two grandsons who became their Grandpa?s guardians in his final hours of life.? ?Well done,? said the Father, ?well done.?

Cast for Recovery gives women with breast cancer respite, fly rod in ...

OQUOSSOC, Maine ? The women at the Casting for Recovery retreat held July 6-8 at Bald Mountain Camps in Oquossoc were there for two reasons ? to get respite from the daily weight of dealing with breast cancer and to have fun. They also were there to learning to fly cast, taught by Registered Maine Guide Bonnie Holding.

Holding volunteered her fly casting skills for a weekend a few years back when she attended a health symposium at Bowdoin College, where she heard a woman talk about Casting for Recovery.

?I was somewhat naive and had no idea what volunteering entailed,? she said. But after more than 10 years with the program, she is now one of the prime organizers of the Casting for Recovery retreat in Maine.

Casting for Recovery had its beginnings in 1996 in Vermont when a breast reconstruction surgeon and a fly fisherman, both women, went fishing. The organization?s mission is to provide fly fishing retreats tailored for women who have or have had breast cancer. The retreats are designed to promote and support mental and physical healing. Only 14 participants are accepted for each retreat and they are chosen by a lottery system. Those whose names are drawn attend the retreat free of charge.

Why fly fishing?

?The casting motion mimics some of the motions of soft tissue recovery used in therapy,? Holding said. But it?s much more than that.

?At the first retreat I went to, I was teaching a woman to cast. I saw her shoulders start to shake and at first I thought she was laughing, then I realized she was sobbing. She was crying, she told me, because as she struggled with trying to figure out how to cast the line it was the first time in two years she had thought of something other than being sick. She told me it felt like a boulder had been lifted off her shoulders. I see that kind of response every year at Casting for Recovery.?

The retreat has been held at different locations each year, including in Eustis, Grand Lake Stream, Ashland, Wilson?s Mills, Rockwood and Middle Dam on the Richardson Lakes in Rangeley. Next year?s location has yet to be determined. Therapists, medical professionals and instructors volunteer their time to staff the retreat.

?The first evening everyone gets introduced and they all become friends in the first five minutes, as if they were young girls at summer camp,? Holding said. ?For most of them, they are stepping outside the box; they have never fly fished before. They hang out, chat. I try to make things as lighthearted as possible. I pass around Jiffy Pops and we make s?mores. I teach them how to cast and tie the knots related to fly fishing, but there?s time for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or to just sit and be. On Sunday they put on waders and off they go to fish for trout and salmon, or whatever they can catch.?

Although the retreat is free to women with breast cancer from throughout Maine, each retreat costs $10,000-$12,000, and those funds must be raised, primarily through the Fish Tails and Cocktails silent auction and raffle held in February at Sugarloaf. Holding said it takes many volunteers organize the event. Retreat alumni also raise funds. T-shirts adorned with an image of brook trout created by artist Georgette Kanach of Gray are sold to raise funds. And artist Vito DeVito of Long Island, N.Y., raises funds for Casting for Recovery through sales of a print of a painting of Holding and her husband, Blaine, in a canoe at Steep Bank Pool on the Kennebago River.

National sponsors of Casting for Recovery include The Harford, L.L. Bean, Smartwool, Under Armour and Sisters on the Fly.

But all the effort is well worth it, Holding said, when she recalls the woman from Iowa who attended the retreat several years ago. The woman had never done anything on her own until then. She got on the plane alone to fly east where she had never been. She drove alone to the camp over terrain unfamiliar to her and she saw her first moose. She didn?t want to fish. She wanted to stand in the water in waders in the current with her arms in the air. ?It?s just washing all this stuff away,? she told Holding.
