Obama urges action on debt ceiling

HONOLULU (AP) ? President Barack Obama is hailing a last-minute deal that avoids the fiscal cliff but says it's just one step in a broader effort to boost the economy and shrink federal deficits.

Obama said in his radio and Internet address Saturday that the new law ? approved by Congress on New Year's Day and signed Thursday ? raises taxes on the wealthiest Americans while preventing a middle-class tax hike that could have thrown the economy back into recession.

With the fiscal cliff crisis barely over, Obama faces new battles in Congress over raising the country's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit, as well as more than $100 billion in automatic spending cuts for the military and domestic programs which were delayed by two months under the fiscal cliff compromise.

Lawmakers promise to replace those across-the-board cuts with more targeted steps that could take longer to implement.

Obama ? speaking from Hawaii, where he is on vacation with his family ? said he is willing to consider more spending cuts and tax increases to reduce the deficit.

But he said he "will not compromise" over his insistence that Congress lift the federal debt ceiling. The nation's credit rating was downgraded the last time lawmakers threatened inaction on the debt ceiling, in 2011.

"Our families and our businesses cannot afford that dangerous game again," Obama said.

If elected officials from both parties "focus on the interests of our country above the interests of party, I'm convinced we can cut spending and raise revenue in a manner that reduces our deficit and protects the middle class," Obama said.

In the Republican address, Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan said that as attention again turns to the debt limit, "we must identify responsible ways to tackle Washington's wasteful spending."

Americans know that "when you have no more money in your account and your credit cards are maxed out, then the spending must stop," Camp said.

(Getty Images)More news from the Irving, Tex. crash last month that claimed the life of Dallas Cowboys practice squad player Jerry Brown Jr.: the Dallas News is reporting that an autopsy has revealed that Brown's blood alcohol content was actually below the legal driving limit. Josh Brent, Brown's best friend, had registered a blood alcohol content of 0.189; the legal limit in Texas is 0.08.

The implication is obvious: Brown was in far better condition to drive than Brent.

According to the autopsy, Brown's BAC was 0.079. However, that sample was taken from fluid in Brown's eye, a common procedure in Texas autopsies and a figure typically higher than the overall BAC. Brown's blood showed a BAC of 0.056. Neither Brown nor Brent was wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred; Brown died of blunt force injury to the head and neck. In the wreck, Brent's Mercedes S600 flipped and traveled more than 800 feet before coming to rest.

In December, Brent was indicted on a charge of intoxication manslaughter in Brown's death.

Should we be Using Provenge Earlier Than We Currently Do ...

Sipuleucel-T (Provenge) is FDA approved after a man becomes castrate resistant. In clinical trials it has shown that it extends life when compared to placebo.

The use of Provenge has raised many questions, the two most common ones are why PSA and disease progression continues while receiving this treatment (see post at for an explanation) and why men don?t get Provenge earlier in their disease, specifically while they are still hormone responsive and their disease is less aggressive. The answer to the second question is simple, the FDA has not approved it for earlier use and will not until the proper clinical trials have been completed showing the efficacy of the treatment in earlier stage disease.

Towards this end there have been a few published studies on the activity of Provenge in men who are hormone-responsive or hormone-naive. In one such study conducted by Beer et al, 176 men who were still hormone-dependent and who had a biochemical relapse (PSA only increase) after a radical prostatectomy were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to 3 to 4 months of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT), with or without Provenge after the completion of the ADT.

The only currently usable result of the research is that between both groups the men?s quality of life was no different and the men who received Provenge treatment had a longer PSA doubling time (155 vs 105 days; P = .038). Since PSA doubling time probably reflects levels of aggressiveness can we assume that men who received earlier Provenge will live longer? No, we cannot assume this, we need to wait until data like this matures and we see if there is a difference in survival between the two groups.

When it comes to a better diet, #2 ?Time? and #5 ?Expense? definitely comes into play. Sure, some of those savory old fashioned recipes only taste right when somebody spends the entire day preparing them, but that shouldn?t stop you from treating yourself like a King or Queen within what might feel like limiting constraints. You can change recipes from drab to fab with just a few ingredients to make a great tasting topping.

Here, I used some pumpkin seeds, herbs, salt, and the heal of a loaf of bread to turn my quick bowl of soup into a real treat. You can use the same technique to dress up casseroles, veggie side-dishes, and the like.

• 1 tsp butter
• ? tsp crushed garlic
• ? cup raw pumpkin seeds (or sunflower)
• some breadcrumbs ? fresh (this recipe was created from a very small heal piece)
• 1 ? Tbsp fresh parsley chopped fine
• 1/8 tsp sea salt
• 1/8 +/- Spice Blend (I used Rogan Josh by Savory Spice Shop)*

Melt butter in a small sauce pan. Add garlic and seeds. Cook on medium heat until seeds start to brown. Add breadcrumbs and spices. Stir until evenly coated. Serve immediately over soup or whatever you are dressing up.

*Don?t freak out about my spice choices. Use what you have and like. Just know that you need to spice this accent a little heavier to carry through the dish.
