A better chair, delivered better.

We fixate on marketing. With my fancy marketing background, I could make big money selling people complex marketing strategies. The best marketing isn?t marketing, but is much more effective and costs a lot less money, too. The problem is it?s work. We don?t like work. Even when it makes us successful. We?d rather do marketing.

Clever Marketing 101 ? Not Sustainable
People buy great marketing once. If the product isn?t great, they?re out.

There are a myriad of marketing firms out there showing you how to get someone to give you more than the three-second glance at a trade show or on your website and how to take them deeper and deeper through a series of bigger and bigger commitments until they finally buy something from you at the bottom of the website.

People tell me this is great marketing, but I believe that by itself, it?s terrible marketing and does more damage than good in the long run. It?s also the lazy man?s approach and because of that, not sustainable.

Recency & Frequency
The two main tenants of good marketing are ?recency? and ?frequency?. If you talked to me recently, but only once, I?m not likely to buy. If you talked to me often a year ago but not since, I?m not likely to buy. You must do both all the time.

This costs a lot of money if you?re doing it via traditional print, radio or TV advertising. One of my clients spends $2million a year in one mid-sized market alone just to stay in the recency/frequency game. If you?re going to use money to do marketing, you usually have to have a lot of it to make enough noise to drown out the other guy with only $250,000.

Then there is the clever website approach, that gets people to go deeper and deeper down the page and finally click on $27.77 (clever marketing says your price should always end in 7). What if people finally respond to your clever website or your $2 million in advertising? Neither of these are your best marketing ? not even close.

Future Clients Come From?
Where do the overwhelming majority of your future customers come from? When I ask this question to live audiences, almost every person will say ? ?from existing clients and existing friends/relationships.? Then why are we investing so much time in cool logos, tortured websites that lead me down a clever spiral path to a commitment, and advertising to find people you?ve never met?

One of my clients has a company called ?Jungle Quest?, a ropes and repelling environment for kids, that is franchising nationally now. In the early days he had $1,000/ mth in profit to reinvest in the company. His first instinct was to buy $1,000/mth in advertising. He decided instead that he would use the $1,000 each month to do something to make the customer experience more ?Jungle-icious? as he describes it.

It was a brilliant move. He improved the look and feel of the environment, added new experiences, improved the clothing on the staff and trained them better, and instituted a customer satisfaction program to stay in touch (recency and frequency). Today virtually all of his future clients come from his existing clients because he has done such a good job delivering a better product. It was hard work, but with a sustainable result ? a better product and better relationships with customers.

Better Marketing? Absolutely.
Most people would say he didn?t improve his marketing, only his product. But in fact he did both because the best marketing you can do is to make a better chair, deliver it with flair, and apply ?recency and frequency? to staying in touch with your existing customers and friends. It?s lot less expensive and more effective than chasing people you?ve never met.

The problem is that it takes work. We have to constantly work at our craft and get better and better at it. And we have to regularly find a way to touch our existing clients, say hello, and let them know we care. All of that sounds too much like work. We?d rather put together a clever website or marketing campaign that does this for us.

People buy great marketing once. If your product isn?t more jungle-icious than the next one, they won?t be back. But if you work hard over a number of years to make your offering distinctive, unique and presented with great customer service, people will refer you to all their friends.

Torres ends drought as Chelsea reaches semis

LONDON (AP) - Fernando Torres ended a 26-game goal drought as Chelsea reached the FA Cup semifinals on Sunday, and Liverpool ensured a second trip to Wembley Stadium this season on a weekend overshadowed by concern over critically ill Bolton player Fabrice Muamba.

Torres scored twice in a 5-2 win over Leicester and Chelsea will face the winner of the Tottenham-Bolton quarterfinal, abandoned on Saturday after Muamba went into cardiac arrest on the field. The Bolton midfielder remained in critical condition in intensive care.

After Gary Cahill opened the scoring for Chelsea, the defender raised his jersey to reveal a "Pray 4 Muamba" T-shirt in tribute to his former Bolton teammate.

"It was a very difficult day for him and the whole football community, all our thoughts are with Fabrice," Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said.

Liverpool, which won the League Cup last month, beat Stoke 2-1 to secure a potential semifinal derby if Everton can overcome Sunderland in a replay.

In the Premier League, Manchester United (22-3-4) won 5-0 at last-place Wolverhampton (5-17-7) to move four points head of Manchester City (21-4-3). United also cut City's goal-difference advantage to three.

At Stamford Bridge, Torres scored off Raul Meireles' pass in the 67th minute for a 3-0 lead, his first goal in 25 hours, 41 minutes of action since scoring twice against Genk in the Champions League on Oct. 19.

He added a near-post header in the 85th for his sixth goal of the season and just his seventh in 52 appearances for Chelsea, which acquired him from Liverpool in January 2011 for 50 million pounds (then $80 million). His scoreless streak included 24 matches for Chelsea and two for Spain.

Chelsea has won four straight since Roberto Di Matteo took over as interim manager after Andre Villas-Boas was fired.

Newcastle strengthened its grip on sixth place with a 1-0 victory over Norwich, with Papiss Demba Cisse scoring in the 11th minute for the hosts.

MADRID (AP) - Santi Cazorla scored on a spectacular free kick that beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the second minute of stoppage time, giving Malaga a 1-1 tie at Real Madrid on Sunday that cut the host's Spanish league lead over second-place Barcelona to eight points.

Karim Benzema marked his first start back from a leg injury with a goal on a 35th-minute header off a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo. But Real Madrid's eight-game league winning streak ended along with Ronaldo's streak of scoring in seven straight matches overall.

With 11 games left, Real Madrid (23-2-2) has 71 points to 63 for Barcelona (19-2-6), the three-time defending league champion.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - The Greek league game between leader Olympiakos and Panathinaikos was abandoned with eight minutes to go because of escalating clashes between fans and the police.

Police announced that 57 people had been detained and a further 20 arrested, while nine police officers were injured, two of them seriously.

"We dedicated several thousand personnel to policing the game and we faced, beginning two hours before the game started, escalating attacks," police spokesman Athanassios Kokalakis said.

Olympiakos (18-2-4), four points ahead of Panathinaikos (17-3-4), was leading 1-0 on Djamel Abdoun's 51st-minute goal.

No Olympiakos fans attended the game at Olympic Stadium in accordance with a league policy not to allow visiting fans due to fears of violence.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - American defender Clarence Goodson scored the tiebreaking goal on a header in the 75th minute, giving Brondby a 2-1 win over Nordsjaelland in the Danish league.

The father of Kilmarnock midfielder Liam Kelly suffered a suspected heart attack just after the final whistle. The Scotland under-21 national team player headed to a hospital, and police announced Jack Kelly died 50 minutes later.

ROME (AP) - Diego Milito failed to convert a penalty kick as Inter Milan was held to a 0-0 tie at home by Atalanta.

Goalkeeper Andrea Consigli blocked Milito's weak spot kick in the 23rd minute. He then also stopped a dangerous header from Walter Samuel on the ensuing corner kick, and Inter didn't come close again.

It was the fifth consecutive home league match Inter failed to win, and it followed a halftime locker from speed by club president Massimo Moratti. On Tuesday, Inter was eliminated from the Champions League by Marseille.

Third-place Lazio struggled in a 1-0 loss at Catania, which won on a volley by former Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie in the 80th.

There are many things that make a house a home. ?Warm family space. ?A entertaining basement or kitchen. Often times, its even the location?proximity to the beach or schools or a favorite golf course. ?But one of the main attractions about on a home?especially in the southern New Jersey region?where our summers are truly glorious? is the backyard.

Backyards are memory makers. ?Think about it. ?Barbeques, pool parties, decks and fire pits. It?s the space family and friends congregate around.

When I grew up?in an 18 foot wide row home in Philadelphia?.we had a patio. ?In my early years it was simply bricks set over top the dirt. ?My job was to ?weed? the spaces between the bricks. ?I hated that! ?But one summer?my father and I pulled up all the bricks and set them back in concrete. ?When we finished?we wrote our names in the corner in a small square of concrete. ?The patio had a?trellis with grape vines growing up and over to provide shade to the patio area below.

We also had a garden that formed a perimeter around a grass area?that as a child was large enough to play catch. Because the property was less than 20 feet wide, I quickly learned to climb fences as the ball would frequently enter a neighboring yard!

I?ve had an on again/off again relationships with gardens ever since. ?It?s a time?commitment?for sure?but like many things in life?the benefits are so sweet! ?Nothing like a caprese salad in August with a Jersey tomato still warm off the vine. ?Or a?ratatouille with fresh summer?vegetables?to accompany what you have on the grill.

Today, I?m on 3 acres?a far cry from 18 feet?and as for a garden??well, we?ll see. ?Running out of time for this summer, I have to act quick! ?But whatever your memories?or your plans are?the reality is?.backyards, without a doubt, hold a special place for all of us.

What Led the American Staff Sergeant to Kill

No one will be able to pinpoint exactly what made an American staff sergeant massacre 16 Afghan civilians, but the facts surrounding the senseless killing spree will loom large in his prosecution. Last night, the unnamed solider's attorney, John Henry Browne, confirmed to CNN that his client could face the death?penalty, which will mean extenuating circumstances will play a major role in court. Browne and U.S. officials have begun surfacing details about the 30-something father of two, including his mental state and the?developments leading up to the massacre. Here were the cocktail of forces weighing on the solider:

Alcohol?It's not something you think of as a determinant of homicidal behavior, but a U.S. official, speaking on background to Bloomberg this morning, says "the drinking, a violation of regulations governing U.S. troops in combat zones, may have been what sent [him] over the edge." It's not clear how much he had imbibed before the incident but senior American officials tell The New York Times that two other soliders drank with him on the night of the shootings who will now face "disciplniary action. The day before the rampage,?The Washington Post?reports that the solider saw his friend's leg blown off and many of the soliders at the base were affected by the incident.?Pushing back against U.S. officials, the soldier's attorney denied?alcohol?use was a factor. ?

Post traumatic stress disorder, brain injury ?The solider had been hurt twice while serving in Iraq, which has led many to speculate that his traumatic brain injury (TBI) or PTSD could be a factor. He suffered a mild traumatic brain injury from either hitting his head on the hatch of a vehicle or in a some sort of car accident, according to U.S. officials. He also suffered an injury resulting in the loss of part of his foot. While there's no indication he was diagnosed with PTSD, he was diagnosed with TBI.?Wired's?Katie Drummond notes that it would be "downright reductionist" to suggests that TBI or PTSD sufferers will commit homicide "but scientists have linked brain trauma to some violent episodes." She takes a look at some of the scholarship:?

One?report?followed 850 young civilian adults over eight years, and found that those who?d suffered a TBI ?reported more interpersonal violence? than their peers. Another,?out of Sweden, tracked over 20,000 people for 35 years. That one, published earlier this year, noted that 9 percent of all TBI-afflicted study participants were implicated in a violent crime at some point after sustaining the injury. By comparison, only 3 percent of those without a brain injury ever committed a violent crime. The researchers concluded that TBI ?significantly increased [the] risk? that an individual would behave violently...

In 1996, a team writing in the journal?Neurologist?reported the findings of their study on 279 Vietnam-era veterans who?d suffered TBIs with varying degrees of severity during their deployment. That team found a strong link between TBIs and aggression

The AP reports that he was screened by medical professionals after his head injury before he was redeployed. Browne said?"He did not know if his client had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but said it could be an issue at trial if experts believe it's?relevant."

Marital tensions?The soldier is married with two young children ages 3 and 4.?U.S. officials have told various news outlets, on background, that domestic issues may have contributed to the episode though the specifics aren't clear. The family had expected him to return home after his last deployment, reportedly. ?Browne said reports of marital problems were "very offensive," saying the couple had financial difficulties but nothing extreme, characterizing their relationship as a "very strong marriage." Browne said the family was "totally shocked" upon hearing about the massacre. "He's never said anything antagonistic about Muslims. He's in general very mild-mannered."

Four deployments?The toll of recurring deployments weighed?heavily on the soldier. According to Browne, "The suspect had been injured twice during his three previous deployments to Iraq, and didn't want to go to Afghanistan to begin with." He began his first (and fourth total) deployment in Afghanistan in December.?The Chicago Tribune?reports Browne saying?"He was told he was not going to be redeployed, and the family was counting on him not to be redeployed, so his family was told his tours were over. And literally overnight that changed," Browne said. "He and the family were not happy that he was going back."

Weighing the totality of forces pressing against the soldier, A source?told?The Times?that "When it all comes out, it will be a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues - he just snapped."
