These Should Be the Real Logos Of Nokia, Starbucks, Playboy, Apple and Dunkin' Donuts [Design]

I love the alternate-reality logo work by svenska designern Viktor Hertz. After his first series, he's back with a new batch of Honest Logos, even better than the first. My favorites: Nokia, Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. [Flickr via Bored Panda] More »

Dr. Dre, Radiohead, Black Keys headline Coachella (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Rappers Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, rock duo The Black Keys and alternative rock band Radiohead will headline the popular Coachella music festival in April, organizers said on Monday.

Rising folk band Bon Iver, the British bands Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys and Pulp, will also play Coachella when the biggest annual music festival of its kind in the United States expands to two weekends for the first time.

The 13th year of the festival, which takes place in the southern California desert some 130 miles east of Los Angeles, also will see performances from Swedish House Mafia, Noel Gallagher, David Guetta and newly-reunited Texas rock band At the Drive-In, organizers said.

Tickets for the 2012 event went on sale in May last year and hotels in the area are already filling up fast.

The 2011 festival, headlined by Kanye West, Arcade Fire and Kings of Leon, attracted more than 90,000 people and prompted the decision to move to two weekends this year -- April 13-15 and April 20-22.

The lineup announced on Monday will be the same for both weekends.

Gracenote Entourage: the ACR TV platform has a name!

Remember Gracenote's plans for an Automatic Content Recognition system for TV? (think: Shazam to help you work out which The Mentalist episode is on). Now it's got a name: Gracenote Entourage. It'll run on smartphones and tablets to identify movies, TV shows and music just from the audio clip. It'll then show you related programming, actor bios and, erm, relevant advertising (but hey, they've gotta make money somehow, yeah?). It'll run on mobile devices and smart TVs, although would that really be easier than pressing the "TV Guide" button on your remote? We'll leave that for you to judge.

Rumors of a slimmer, more capable sibling to Acer's A200 tablet have been floating around for a while. But all Acer had to reveal at their press conference today was that the still unnamed tablet would have a full 1080P display, and will be powered by a quad core processor. More »

COMMON?S ?CANADA DRY? DISS TO DRAKE BECOMES A TWITTER TRENDING TOPIC !

It looks like the Common vs. Drake beef ain?t going nowhere soon!

?I heard you say you aint a b*tch ?cause you sing/You a b*tch ?cause you cling like a b*tch that?s 18? ? Common ?Stay Schemin? remix

As we previously reported, Drake and Common are beefing and it looks like Com is not even playing around as he fires off on Drake on the remix to ?Stay Schemin.? It?s a direct reply to Drizzy?s verse on the song.

Drake:?

?I just ask that when you see me, you speak up n*gga that?s all/Don?t be ducking like you never wanted nothing,? Drake raps on the track. ?It?s feeling like rap changed, it was a time it was rugged/Back when if a n*gga reached it was for the weapon, nowadays n*ggas reach just to sell their record.?

There was immediate speculation that the verse was directed at Common, who previously dissed Drake on the song ?Sweet?

?He [Drake] opened his mouth and said some things, so if that?s what he want, all that subliminal [talk]?you could do that too, but say it now,? Common told Sway of MTV News and Shade 45?s ?Sway in the Morning? back in December when asked if ?Sweet? was directed at Drake.

?The verse is about me but when you hear some of the stuff on the chorus it?s like you can?t help but think about dude and I guess that?s what he felt. So at the end of day he fits in that category, he already embraced it, so wear it.?

The battle is in full swing now. Check out Common?s new diss below.

?You aint wettin nobody, you?canada?dry?? ? Common <<< Ouch!

The release of this diss early this morning has caused a Twitter frenzy with Canada Dry, Serena Williams (who they are allegedly beefin?over), and Drake and Common trending all morning!!!!

Team Drake or Team Common??

Obama's Military Cut May Mean More Layoffs in Ohio (ContributorNetwork)

President Obama outlined his plan for $1 trillion in military cuts over the next decade during a press conference at the Pentagon yesterday, according to NewsMax. The planned cuts may mean more layoffs in Ohio. The southwestern and centrals regions of the state are home to some of the nation's largest military supply manufacturers and research centers, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

In 2011, military spending accounted for $1.7 billion of the $2 billion the federal government spent in the Cincinnati region, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Former Army Lieutenant Colonel and current Florida Representative Allen West told Fox News that a "one-size-fits-all" approach to military needs in dangerous.

Here are some facts and figures about military spending in the Ohio area:

* Military purchases ranging from mundane toiletries to next generation weapons account for $8 out of every $10 the federal government spends in southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

* Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is the state's single largest employer and plays a huge role in the Dayton area economy, according to Examiner. Most of Wright-Patterson's activity supports logistics and intelligence.

* Wornick Company is a major supplier of ready-to-eat (MREs) military meals, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Chief Financial Officer Dustin McDulin told the Enquirer that the Blue Ash-based company employs 500 people.

* The Springfield Air National Guard Base in central Ohio also performs intelligence support endeavors, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

* GE Aviation in Evandale employs 800 workers who manufactured the engine for the Joint Strike Fighter and a next-generation multi-role fighter, according to the Enquirer. A total of $3 billion were funneled into the company for military equipment during the past 15 years.

* Battele in Columbus routinely completes $700 million of work on Pentagon development and research programs, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The non-profit research center is currently working on weapons to modernize the American military's fleet which could be impacted by President Obama's plan, according to spokeswoman Katy Delaney's statements to the Dispatch.

* The L-3 Communications Corporation's Fuzing and Ordnance Systems Union Township plant is one of the largest supplies of safe-arming devices in the world. The company recently expanded its business to include contracts with United States allies, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The company employees 600 workers.

* Ohio Senator Rob Portman told the Columbus Dispatch that he is among those in Congress willing to vote to reverse President Obama's planned budget cuts.

* According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, military agencies which currently hold contracts in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area include the Defense Logistics Agency, Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, Defense Media Center, Department of the Air Force, Department of Defense Education Activity, Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Defense Contract Management Agency, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the Defense Logistics Agency.

U.S. pulled Iraq troops too soon

The withdrawal of U.S. troops has predictably led to more instability in Iraq, says Michael V. Hayden.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ex-CIA director Michael V. Hayden: The sectarian strife in Iraq was predictable
  • He says the background of the nation and prime minister set stage for tension and violence
  • Presence of U.S. troops has calmed danger zones around the world, he says
  • Hayden: Withdrawing troops may have fulfilled campaign promise, but move was too risky

Editor's note: Gen. Michael V. Hayden, who was appointed by President George W. Bush as CIA director in 2006 and served until February 2009, is a principal with the Chertoff Group, a security consulting firm. He serves on the boards of several defense firms and is a distinguished visiting professor at George Mason University. Hayden is an adviser to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. He held senior staff positions at the Pentagon and, from 1999 to 2005, was director of the National Security Agency.

(CNN) -- Very little in life is truly inevitable. When briefing policy makers, I would try to point out that a lot of it wasn't even predictable (at least in any scientific sense). But surely what is happening in Iraq, the increasingly darkening clouds of sectarian division, can hardly be described as unexpected.

In late 2006, as the Bush administration was debating the so-called surge, there were few doubts that five brigades worth of professional combat power could buy down the hellish level of violence then inflicting that country. There was less certainty that even with a reduced level of violence the Iraqi government could leverage that reality to make meaningful political progress.

At one meeting I pointed out that to do so Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki would have to "govern beyond his life experience." Having lived for an extensive period in exile, fearing for his life and seeing Baathists bent on his murder at every turn, he was far from a sure bet to be the kind of visionary, inclusive leader that we all thought Iraq needed. The Shiite-dominated Iraqi military and police services were also problematic, as strengthening them without the necessary political development threatened to make what Sunnis and Kurds saw as a predatory force simply more effective in their predations.

Michael V. Hayden

Michael V. Hayden

Aware of these dangers, along with the surge, the Bush administration spared no energy in working to coax, coach and mentor al-Maliki into a broader approach toward governance. In addition to the tireless efforts of two talented ambassadors -- Zalmay Khalilzad and Ryan Crocker -- private, secure video conferences between the U.S. president and Iraqi prime minister were routine.

60 killed in Iraq bombings

The substantial U.S. military presence and its large training mission were also used to prod the Iraqi military along the path of nonsectarian professionalism. So important was this presence that sustaining it by concluding a Status of Forces Agreement (the rules governing how foreign troops may operate in a nation) became a near obsession of the administration.

Even with that effort, the most that the traffic would bear was an extension through the end of 2011 although both parties knew that it could be subject to renewal. That was always going to be difficult; we knew it would be impossible without a president willing to invest significant political capital -- domestically and internationally -- to achieve it.

With that agreement unextended and now expired, al-Maliki appears to be acting out the darkest shadows of his own past. Over the last months, he has reneged on a power-sharing agreement with Sunnis in several key ministries, arrested hundreds of suspected Baathists (read Sunni oppositionists) and -- as the last American troops were leaving Iraq and fresh from an audience in the Oval Office -- he has now ordered the arrest of his own Sunni vice president, Tariq al-Hashimi, for alleged "terrorism."

Along with all of this, al Qaeda in Iraq greeted the U.S. withdrawal with a series of deadly bombings against largely Shiite targets. Al Qaeda was always expected to take advantage of the "seam" created by the handoff of counterterrorism operations from American to Iraqi control, but now even a badly weakened al Qaeda can exploit the sense of Sunni vulnerability that al-Maliki's actions have created.

The situation may yet be salvaged. America is not without tools. Ambassador Jim Jeffrey cut short his holiday home leave to return to Iraq and, as he has in the past, he will no doubt use his considerable skills in an attempt to defuse the situation. But the ambassador will have fewer tools at his disposal.

President Barack Obama has consistently characterized the withdrawal as a "promise kept," adding that "it's time to turn the page." For nearly a year, we witnessed the oddity of a president sticking to his campaign promise while parts of his government, particularly in the Defense Department, worked to extend the American presence. At Fort Bragg, North Carolina, however, the president brought down the curtain, telling the assembled soldiers that Iraq's future now was "in the hands of its people. America's war in Iraq will be over."

But in other, similar circumstances we have found a continued military presence to be invaluable, not for continued war making but to foster local progress and regional stability. Whatever the withdrawal means in purely physical terms in Iraq, the psychic impact there and in the region is that America is less interested. In Iraq that means that each of the factions are going to their sectarian corners and are preparing to come out fighting.

Stephen Biddle of the Council on Foreign Relations points to Kosovo (itself a controversial intervention) as a model where a continued U.S. presence helps deter old protagonists from resuming shooting at one another. In Korea, history may judge that -- beyond the obvious defense value of U.S. forces -- they also nurtured the development of Korean democracy by retarding what would have been an even greater militarization of Korean society had they been absent. And in Europe, a U.S. footprint there says that the continent's importance to us is beyond rhetoric.

Clearly American military deployments cannot be governed by a principle of "once in, in forever." To put it bluntly, training wheels have to come off sometime. But in this case they may have come off based on something other than the needs or talents of the cyclist.

The White House has made efforts to downplay recent events in Iraq: certainly bad, but things we have seen before, and we expect that the Iraqis will muddle through.

White House spokesman Jay Carney summarized it this way: "This kind of political turmoil has been occurring in Iraq periodically, as they have taken steps forward and, occasionally, steps backward, but generally made progress. ... That will continue."

That is not inevitable. I would hesitate to predict it. I certainly would not casually base my policy on that expectation.

Man banned from owning dog after puppy gets drunk (AP)

LONDON ? A British court has barred a man from having a dog for three years after his Labrador puppy was discovered drunk.

Matthew Cox had been drinking vodka and coke with his roommate on Aug. 22 when he left his glass on the floor to go for a smoke.

He returned to find that his 6-month-old dog, Max, had swallowed the booze. But he left the animal at home, and prosecutor Maria Moore told Nottingham Magistrate's Court in central England that the puppy was later spotted staggering and falling over near Cox's home.

Police were called and took the dog to an emergency vet, where it was put on a drip to flush the alcohol out of its system.

Magistrate J. A. Smith on Wednesday called the incident "downright stupid."

The puppy has since been given a new home.

Senegal music star Ndour makes bid for presidency (AP)

DAKAR, Senegal ? World music icon Youssou Ndour says he plans to run in Senegal's presidential election next month, challenging an 85-year-old incumbent whose plans to seek a third term have sparked violent protests.

Ndour, who made the announcement late Monday on his private radio and TV stations, joins some 20 other candidates already running against President Abdoulaye Wade.

While the Grammy-winning artist sells out concert venues worldwide and is the West African country's most famous cultural export, his prospects with Senegalese voters remain unclear.

The election is less than two months away, and the incumbent president has been in power for more than a decade.

"For a very long time, many Senegalese of different backgrounds have called for my candidacy for the presidency next February," Ndour said. "I've listened, I've heard and I am responding favorably to their request. I am a candidate. It's a supreme patriotic duty, the best I can give of myself. I am the alternative to the current leadership in place in the country."

Ndour, 52, is well known in Senegal for his scathing critique of the country's ruling party. He already owns a hugely popular private radio station that holds regular debates featuring government critics.

And he has a newspaper that routinely highlights corruption allegations involving the country's ruling elite, including the president's family.

Residents of Senegal's capital expressed doubt that the musician would fare well at the polls ? or in office.

"It's good enough that he makes good music," said Abdou Ngom, 26. "Politics is made of treason and low blows. I'm sure that real politicians will not help him."

But retiree Moussa Diop, 70, said he admired the musician.

"Ndour is a good example of courage. Because he shows that it's possible to start with nothing and to succeed," Diop said.

But political analyst Cheikh Yerim Seck said Ndour is taking a risk by running.

"He risks first of all the credibility of his media holdings," he said, adding that Ndour's newspaper, radio station and TV station could be seen as complicit in his bid.

Wade's plans to run, as well as frequent power cuts and the spiraling cost of living, sparked violent protests last year in what has historically been one of West Africa's most stable democracies.

Once a symbol of the opposition, Wade became president in a landmark election hailed for being one of the first peaceful transfers of power on the continent.

He set off a wave of criticism though when he announced he planned to run for a third term, using a loophole in the electoral law to circumvent the two-term maximum set out in the constitution.

And massive street protests hit Senegal's capital last year following a proposed constitutional change that would have paved the way for Wade's son to succeed him. Wade later agreed to cancel it, but the unrest marked the biggest challenge to his 11-year rule.

Man pleads guilty in bomb attempt near Columbine (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? A convicted bank robber accused of trying to set off a bomb at a shopping mall near Columbine High School on the 12th anniversary of the shooting rampage there pleaded guilty on Friday to a federal charge.

Earl Moore, a 65-year-old convicted bank robber who was released from prison just a week before the April 20 incident, faces a minimum 30-year prison term when he is sentenced in March.

Moore pleaded guilty during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Denver to a single count of using a destructive device during a crime of violence.

"I didn't have any intention of hurting anybody, your honor," Moore told Senior U.S. District Judge John Kane. "I guess I was just upset. It was a domestic thing. It doesn't make any sense."

Moore's defense attorney and prosecutors agreed that his action had nothing to do with the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine massacre.

The device, which was connected to two small propane canisters, was placed at Southwest Plaza but did not explode although it did cause minor fire damage in a service corridor.

There were no injuries, but the incident forced authorities to evacuate the mall and stirred alarm on the anniversary of the Columbine shooting rampage.

Two Columbine students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, fatally shot 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves on April 20, 1999, also using makeshift bombs made from propane tanks.

Moore was "sleeping in the woods" without a job or place to live when he slipped into a back door of Southwest Plaza mall with the explosive materials, his attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Robert Pepin, told reporters.

Pepin said his client wanted him to tell reporters he regrets his actions and "deeply regrets any impact" they had on people traumatized by the massacre 12 years earlier. He said Moore did not realize he placed the bomb on the anniversary.

Kane, who said that Moore faced "essentially a life sentence" because of his age, told attorneys for both sides he would consider ordering a mental evaluation of the defendant.

Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of arson in exchange for Moore's guilty plea. Moore had been released from federal prison on April 13 after serving time for the 2005 robbery of a West Virginia bank.

Pets with Newt? | Race 4 2012

So, apparently this is a real thing. Newt now has a website entitled, ?Pets with Newt? where you can send pictures of your pets supporting Newt Gingrich. Here?s the cover photo:

Thoughts?

  • Micah Says:

Please let this nightmare of a primary be over!

  • SixMom Says:

Anyone want to add a caption to this photo?

    Here?s mine:

?I taught him everything he knows?.

  • Dave Gaultier Says:

?Crikey! There?s a croc over there. Let?s see what I can do to piss it off!?

  • SixMom Says:

    1. Micah

    ROFL

    So fitting.

  • SixMom Says:

?What do you mean animals can?t register to vote??

  • SixMom Says:

?Are you sure his signature doesn?t count??

  • M Says:

    Ventura endorses Paul

  • Matt "MWS" Says:

Newt must have an angle here to make money.

  • Matt "MWS" Says:

    M,

Is that supposed to help Paul establish his non-looniness?

  • Mark in PA Says:

    6
    LOL!

This is so gimmicky ? Newt has a thousand ideas ? some great and some not so? th problem with Newt is that he?s willing to try them all!!

  • aspire Says:

8 That?s what I thought. He?s probably going to sell some pet book or something.

  • Boomer Says:

    Newt!

  • CraigS Says:

Isn?t this the host of Wild Kingdom????

    CraigS

  • Saveourship Says:

    Very presidential.

  • K.G. Says:

These are all hilarious?but IMO Boomer takes the prize. VERY good, Boom.

  • BuckeyeWeiss Says:

Personally, I am an over-the-top pet lover myself but this is way too much. This is just hilarious. Another reason not to take Newt seriously.

  • K.G. Says:

It?s not the cute little animal; it?s the hat. Some people just shouldn?t wear hats.

  • Massachusetts Conservative Says:

Noot looks like a lawn gnome with that hat for some reason. Or some sort of mythical creature.

  • SixMom Says:

?Its your turn to do something funny for the camera. I did it last time.?

  • Massachusetts Conservative Says:

Wow. HotAir is pre-eminently bashing Marco Rubio, calling him a fake Tea Partier and saying that they are expecting him to ditch the Tea Party in favor of corruption ? with no evidence even discussed.

I don?t know alot about Rubio, I just find it a bit strange that he?s become such a rockstar and people act like he?ll definitely be a great president and should be on the short list for VP.

I mean he hasn?t been in office that long at all and people are really jumping the gun.

Rubio needs to weigh his options. Does he want to continue to be a ?Tea party? guy or does he want to payback for the donations?

If he endorses Mittens, he?s dead to the Tea Party.

  • SixMom Says:

?Forget it. You are just not as evolved as I am.?

  • Reginald from texas Says:

?hey little fella, I can newter you with my bare hands?

  • Micah Says:

Man, this might seal the deal for Newt. I was iffy on my support for him but now that I know he loves animals unlike Mitt who straps them to his roof, I?m sold!!!

    Newt/Lassie 2012!

  • Thomas Alan Says:

    Thoughts?

    This requires thought?

  • Brett Says:

At least it isn?t an eagle. That?d actually make me gag.

  • Dave Gaultier Says:

?In order to win the evangelical vote, I am attempting to re-create Noah?s Ark. Now all I need to do is make sure that one of these suckers is male and one is female. Hang on, little fella, this won?t hurt a bit? Ah! My eye!?

  • Brett Says:

Micah, I completely forgot about the Romney road trip with the dog. Yup. Too bad Newt treats animals better than wives.

  • Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    26

    LOL

  • Jonathan Says:

I think Newt found his running mate.

  • Boomer Says:

If only Newt had been neutered earlier in his life like my dog he would have had a lot less issues.

  • Bloodshy Says:

    17. ?It?s not the cute little animal; it?s the hat. Some people just shouldn?t wear hats.?

I?d go a step further. It?s not the hat; it?s the head. But I?m not sure what he can do about that?

  • Mark in PA Says:

Look up ?Zany? in the dictionary, and it will talk about doing things like this a couple days before the first Caucus in a presidential race!

  • K.G. Says:

#31 Actually on second thought, I was thinking the same thing. The hat is fine; the animal is fine. It?s the great big fat Newt-head that?s the prob.

  • SixMom Says:

My husband didn?t believe the photo was really from an official website and when I showed him, he was in disbelief, he paused and then he said, ?Must of been Callista?s brainstorming, she?s kind of weird?. ?Oh i know, people just LOVE pets?.?

My 19-year-old daughter couldn?t stop laughing at all the comments.

  • Jack Bauer's Dad Says:

One monkey to the other: ??and this is the all-too-common Washington Cooterhound.?

  • SixMom Says:

From my 19-year old daughter Heather:

?I?ll let you hold my monkey if you vote for me.?

  • afk Says:

Does using this picture allow Gingrich to deduct his entire vacation?

  • Colorado Guy Says:

As an animal lover myself I say, fine, why the heck not?

As far as the photo itself, cool. At least it?s doesn?t depict Newt strapping the family dog the roof of his car and subsequently barreling down the interstate. :)

  • zeek Says:

Colorado guy of course you thought it looked cool, you were in the photo with him.
(newt doesnt even bother to strap his wives on the hood he just jettisens them like unwanted baggage)

  • Noelle Says:

My pet (a dog) is vehemently opposed to Newt Gingrich. He told me so. He is disgusted by Newt?s inability to be faithful to his family. My dog, recognizing that he too has weaknesses in this area, at least had the decency to get neutered, and therefore has never been in a committed relationship with another dog.

  • zeek Says:

#39 In the spirit of newt I apologize for what I said to colorado guy, but historically it was not out of line considering the revolutionary war and the fact that I am much like Abraham lincoln.

  • zeek Says:

#40 your comment reminds me of that classic far side cartoon ? The one where one dog is in the car and souts out to his fellow dog in the yard. With great price the pet dog brags??Ha Ha Guess what Rex, after we go to the store I get to go to the vet and get ?TUTORED?

It seems to me that many times those who are so thrilled with being tutored by Newt end up have their causes nuetered by him.

  • zeek Says:

?Shouts? and ?pride? perhaps I could tell a joke better if I took time to spell check.

  • econ grad stud Says:

Adulterous Heavy Petting with Newt Gingrich; guaranteed within 3 years of election to any political office.

  • SixMom Says:

    44. Econ,

That?s some very sharp wit and sadly totally true.

  • SixMom Says:

    37. LOL

  • Thomas Alan Says:

    40:

    What a sad story.

Naw, the poor thing will just be lashed to the table for an endless series of book signings before becoming a nervous wreck and biting Callista??.You don?t wanna hear what happens to the poor thing after that?

  • Ryan60657 Says:

Zany. This might be Newt?s ?Dukakis in the Tank? moment.

?Are there any interns here who would like to touch my monkey??

  • zeek Says:

You guys are good. My family keeps asking me what I am laughing about.
