Self-esteem: Imporve By Identifying Your Triggers

A lack of self-esteem can affect all areas of one?s life.? It can be difficult to go through life with a low opinion of one?s own self-worth, and every part of life becomes more of a challenge.? Jobs and achievements are more difficult, because you can?t convince other people to believe in you if you don?t believe in yourself, and you may lack the confidence to finish the task at all. Interpersonal relationships become a struggle when you don?t feel as though you deserve to be happy, or if you feel as though you?re not good enough for those around you.? A lack of self-esteem can lead people to settle for less than they deserve, accomplish less than they would otherwise, and lead generally unhappy lives.? Fortunately, there are some simple steps that anyone can take to boost their self-esteem, build their confidence, and bring more joy into their lives.

The first and most important step is to identify the conditions or situations which trigger feelings of low self-esteem.? Frequent causes include arguments with spouses or significant others, trouble at work or loss of a job, difficulties in school, and a variety of other events or situations.? Figuring out which circumstances or changes in situation cause the feelings of low self-esteem will help you to identify problems before they arise, and stop the cycle of low self-esteem at its source.

The second step is to become more aware of your own thoughts and beliefs.? Since you now know what types of events and situations tend to lead to feelings of low self-esteem, try to identify your thoughts and feelings about those situations.? Listen to your internal dialogue, and try to figure out what you tell yourself in these situations, and whether it?s productive or positive.? Think about your interpretation of the situation, and try to figure out whether it?s rational, or unreasonable.

Identifying how you feel about certain things helps you to take more conscious control over your thought processes, and make them more positive.? Start challenging those negative thoughts; ask yourself if they are accurate and reasonable, or if there might be another way for you to view the situation.? There are certain thought patterns and attitudes which tend to be problematic when it comes to causing low self-esteem.? All-or-nothing thinking ? feeling that you?re either the best at something or a total failure ? is a frequent trigger for self-esteem issues.? You may mentally filter out the negatives, and focus on them exclusively, or convert positives into negatives, devaluing achievements and accomplishments.

Once you identify problematic feelings and thought patterns, you can adjust your thoughts, and replace negative and inaccurate thoughts with constructive ones.? Try to focus more on the positives in life, and instead of putting yourself down, start encouraging yourself more.? Avoid thoughts that contain ?should? and ?must,? or which seem to imply these conditions, because they can cause you to put too much pressure on yourself and those close to you.? By implementing these and other helpful strategies, you can change your attitude toward your situation in life, and learn to have more confidence, and a better outlook.
